Everything you need to know about Georgia’s 2016 class
National Signing Day is upon us, and a lot of Georgia’s 2016 class is already off the board. Now, we take a look at the grand scheme of the class: the commitments, the players on the board, and the in-state collegiate classes.
Best Fits
Miller Grove guard Alterique Gilbert is a great fit for Connecticut and head coach Kevin Ollie. He fits the mold of everything that successful guards have been for the Huskies. Parts of his game resemble that of Ryan Boatright, Shabazz Napier, and Kemba Walker, which could mean special things for Gilbert at UCONN.
Players who play hard will always fit well on any program. Two high major guys who will come in, play hard, and earn minutes will be Josh Okogie, who is Georgia Tech bound, and Brandon Robinson, a future UNC Tar Heel. We could even see these two match up against one another at some point down the line.
The Zep Jasper commitment to Charleston is an interesting one. Jasper has become known as one of the best on-ball defenders around and Cougars head coach Earl Grant plays a hard-nosed style of play. Jasper could become a player for Charleston that helps win games because of his defensive abilities.
Scoring Steals
A number of schools have dipped into Georgia to land scorers that could end up becoming steals. New Hampshire has Greenforest guard John Ogwuche on board, who will come in and be a scoring presence from day one. Furman also landed McIntosh shooting guard Jordan Lyons, whose game has rounded into form as one of the state’s best scorers. These two guys could be impact players as freshmen for their respective programs and will be ones to look for at the next level. However, one of the biggest steals might come in-state with Gainesville shooting guard D’Marcus Simonds headed to Georgia State. Simonds will be an immediate contributor for Ron Hunter and has the tools to be an all-conference type of player in the Sun Belt.
What’s Left to Watch For?
The biggest story left is obviously Georgia’s top player in 2016, Kobi Simmons and whom he will choose. He is down to UNLV, Ohio State, and Kentucky, but will not make a final decision until the spring. Simmons is not only the top uncommitted player in the state, but is one of the best players left on the board in the nation.
But who’s left on the board in Georgia?
Miller Grove guard Aaron Augustin has recently re-opened his recruitment after a brief commitment to East Tennessee State. After Simmons, he is Georgia’s next-best uncommitted point guard.
Lithonia power forward Jacara Cross and Northside Columbus forward Davion Thomas will be two players that should become very popular with coaches as the season progresses. A lot of the frontcourt prospects in the state are off the board, and these guys possess the size and talent that could make them priorities.
At the point guard spot, McIntosh’s Will Washington and Allatoona’s Ephraim Tshimanga will be players to look at. Washington has been looked at by a number of schools who will continue to be interested in his services. On the contrast, Tshimanga remains one of Georgia’s most under-recruited players who will continue to receive interest as the season goes on.
