Team Preview: For the first time in a long time, Miller Grove is not entering the season as the reigning state champions. Because of this one thing is for sure: they will be hungry to get back to Macon. Coach Sharman White has a lot to work with on this year’s squad and one of the deepest backcourts in the state. That backcourt starts with senior point guard and UCONN commit Alterique Gilbert. Gilbert is one of the top point guards in the nation and will be a contender for the Georgia Mr. Basketball title. Also returning in the backcourt is junior Josh Jackmon, who is one of the top defenders in the state, and Aidan Saunders, who provides good size and scoring ability. Joining them in the Miller Grove backcourt are newcomers Aaron Augustin, Tae Hardy, and Colin Young. Augustin, a Peachtree Ridge transfer and former ETSU commit, brings toughness, a steady ball handler, and a good defender to the Wolverines. Southwest Dekalab transfer Tae Hardy adds yet another scoring presence and ability to get to the rim, and Laney transfer Colin Young is one of the state’s most undervalued shooters who can fill it up from the perimeter.
While the backcourt is deep and has some proven talents, the frontcourt might be a question mark for the Wolverines. Senior forward Raylon Richardson is back and gives the frontcourt and athletic boost. However, the rest of the frontcourt is less proven. It wouldn’t surprise me to see freshman forward Tworn Seals get quality minutes in the frontcourt. The young forward is not afraid to mix it up and get physical in the paint.
Despite having an unproven frontcourt, Miller Grove will have plenty of talent. They will be very guard oriented, most likely running a four-guard offense in most situations. It wouldn’t be shocking to see them go five guards at times. One important part of their season will be on the defensive end. Between Gilbert, Jackmon, and Augustin, Miller Grove has three of the best defensive guards in the state, and points for the opposing backcourts will not come easy. The Wolverines will be a very interesting team to watch all year.
