The top team in Savannah this year is…?
Jenkins. The Warriors are losing a lot from last year’s state title team. Malik Benlevi is now a frosh at Georgia State and state title game hero Eric Johnson is also gone. However, with the expanded role, Trevion Lamar (pictured above) could blossom into a player that could lead Jenkins back to another great year. Adding Savannah High School transfer Zion Williams will also give Jenkins a big boost in the backcourt. I also love the fearless intensity that Bakari Bryant’s teams play with. - Carter Wilson
I can’t argue with you on this one. Jenkins is firmly supplanted as the top dogs in Savannah right now. I think Johnson and Savannah will be as good as they usually are - playing around that 20-win area. But the team in Savannah (or at least relatively close) that I think could take over this “top spot” tag is Liberty County. They did win 24 games last season and the team’s top player - Davion Mitchell - is better than ever. Even with a new coach on board, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Liberty County replicate the same kind of success they had last year. - Justin Young
The top team in Macon this year is….?
Westside. Sure, they lose three out of their top four scorers from last year. But having the state’s best player in the class of 2018 in Khavon Moore doesn’t hurt. Moore is a rare talent with length, size, and a guard skill set. He will be very difficult to stop in middle Georgia, and will make the players around him better as well. - CW
I like Central Macon this season. They return the top four scorers from last year’s team that won 20 games. Junior guard Antarius McCoy is one of the state’s best overall scorers. He averaged 22.2 points a contest last season. Big man Kentrevious Jones (6-10, 280) is one of the biggest players in the state and should be a problem for teams in the middle. Juniors Derrick Evans, Jr. and Rakwon Iverson can both be go-to scorers, too. - JY
The top team in the Albany area this year is…?
Bainbridge. Georgia commit Tyree Crump is one of the state’s best scoring guards and will continue to score the ball at a high level this year. However, also returning are senior guard Devonte Jones and senior forward Trevon Shaw, both of whom were double-figure scorers last year as well. With that kind of firepower returning off of an eighteen-win team, Bainbridge could be a team to watch in AAAA. - CW
Westover. But this was a tough call. The Patriots graduated significant talent but Dallas Smith may have best backcourt in South Georgia. Allec Williams is the team’s best returning player. He’ll pair with Lee County transfer Kris Gardner and stud freshman Jordan Brown. The trio could average a collective 36 points a game this year. The team will need some time to gel but the talent is there to make a strong run this season. Keep this in mind....I’ve been told Thomasville may be the best team in Southwest Georgia. So, keep an eye on that situation. I know I will. - JY
