Welcome to the 2015-2016 season in the state of Georgia. The March to Macon has officially begun and we couldn’t be more excited to get things rolling here in the Peach State. Every day for the next couple of weeks we will tackle three questions at 3 p.m. about the upcoming season. 

Justin Young and Carter Wilson will jump right into the conversation about the best teams, best players, best games and much more as the opening tip looms around the corner.

Of the teams that won a state championship last year, which team is the most likely to repeat as champions? 

That’s an interesting question and one that doesn’t have an easy answer. Repeating as state champs isn’t out of the ordinary in Georgia. We’ve had at least one repeat state champ every year since 2009. Of last year’s champions, I think Seminole County and Jonesboro have legitimate chances of pulling off the repeat. The team returns nearly everyone from the 28-win team from last year. UGA-bound guard Jordan Harris was sensational last season, including a dominating run in the post-season. He’s hungry for one more. Pace Academy will be a tough team to stop because of the size and talent of a guy like Wendell Carter but Harris and his SCHS crew have tasted the ‘ship. Hard to deny that when it comes down to playoff time. Home court advantage in the state playoffs could be a determining factor. - Justin Young

They say that it’s always tough to repeat as state champions. However, Georgia is no stranger to having teams repeat. Out of the seven champions from last season, I think that Jonesboro has the best chance to repeat. Despite the loss of players like Austin Donaldson and Tracey Hector, they still return big pieces from last year’s team including MJ Walker and Jamari Smith. Head coach Daniel Maehlman knows how to win and plays an aggressive style that is always tough to beat. I like Jonesboro’s chances this year. - Carter Wilson

Can Miller Grove start a new state championship streak? 

That’s a great question and one we have to ask/answer. The Wolverines are one of the best programs in the nation and every season’s expectations start with the question of whether or not they can win a title. A new streak - why not? Sharman White and staff have plenty of talent to work with. Guards, guards, guards. Miller Grove is loaded with them. When you add Aaron Augustin (formerly of Peachtree Ridge), Colin Young (a key member of Laney’s terrific team last season) and Tae Hardy (a talented scorer that transferred in from SW Dekalb) to an already strong group, I like their chances. The biggest question I have is this - how will White glue it all together and get everyone to buy into roles. That can be a difficult task. I do know this - no one inside the Lithonia program is talking about four, five or six state championships in a row. They are only concerned about one streak. And that’s one game at a time. - JY

I don’t see why they couldn’t start a new championship streak with their current group. They have one of the deepest backcourts in the state, and one thing is guaranteed: Sharman White will find a way to get the most out of his guys. I’m interested to see how Aaron Augustin, Tae Hardy, and Colin Young mix with the cast of guards that Miller Grove returns in Alterique Gilbert, Josh Jackmon, and Aidan Saunders. That mix will be the most important part of their success this season. Regardless, they are one of the most talented teams in the state and will again be a factor to make a run at the AAAAA state championship. - CW

Who is the most exciting player to watch in the state (that can be athletic, it can be entertaining, it can be clutch, etc.)? 

After his play over the last three years at Miller Grove, it’s really hard to argue against UCONN commit Alterique Gilbert. He brings a ton of entertainment to the offensive side of the floor with his ability to handle the ball and the way he can score it. He makes a lot of plays that leave you wondering how he did it and makes it look easy along the way. He also adds a lot of energy and toughness defensively, which is always a lot of fun to watch too. He takes pride in himself on that side of the floor, which is really refreshing to watch. - CW

Listen, I’m a sucker for the highlight. I’m not afraid to admit it. Let’s pop the popcorn and pull up a chair. Basketball is the purest form of athletic entertainment there is in the world of athletics. That said, give me Davion Mitchell any day of the week. The Auburn commitment from Liberty County is one of the most explosive players in Georgia and can do things in midair that few can in high school basketball. He’s good for one mind-blowing play a game (at least) and should be primed for several opportunities to showcase that explosion this high school season. He’s one of the best athletes we have in the Peach. - JY
