2015 Fall Preview Team 2 Evaluations
We had a full day of hoops at the 2015 Fall Preview and will spend the next two weeks unloading player evaluations from the camp. We’ll go team by team and unload our notes from our staff. Meet Team 2 from camp.
Theodore Benn, PG, Discovery, 2016: The strong-bodied guard attacks, attacks, attacks. He finished well throughout the day and made positive plays in the paint as a penetrating backcourt player. As a senior at start-up DHS, he could one of the go-to guys in Gwinnett County’s newest school. Seeing him in this setting was encouraging.
Brevin Ellis, PG, McEachern, 2018: The 5-foot-11 guard stayed the course with his play, always played with high energy, was coachable and looked for moments to make those around him better. A score-first guard, Ellis has tools to build upon.
Maurice Harvey, PG, Miller Grove, 2019: The freshman class was well-represented at the camp, especially at the point guard position. Having a chance to be at a camp like this is exactly what the “Preview” is all about. It is a chance for a guy like Harvey to get on the floor with high-level players, see where the bar is set and compete towards the goal of getting better every year for the next four years.
Grant Howard, SG, Alexander, 2018: Good-looking shooter that has nice length and strength for a younger player. He can put the ball on the floor and attack with the dribble well, too. There were nice flashes of production throughout the camp. The 6-foot-3 guard can defend multiple positions and his consistency of effort was a positive at camp. This is a big year for him at AHS and he could be primed for a real breakout season at the GHSA level.
Charlie O’Briant, PF, GAC, 2017: The 6-foot-7 forward is very unique with his size and skill-set. The face-up four man is mobile and has great feet. He is perfect in pick-and-roll situations with his ability to hit shots from the perimeter. O’Briant has a great touch around the rim, too. The camp setting wasn’t the best environment to showcase his talent, but the system guy quietly produced.
Acton Shirley, C, Pike County, 2017: Shirley did a great job of using his broad shoulders and big body to his advantage. The 6-foot-10 big man was the benefactor of effective screens, as he got several easy opportunities around the basket. Once his coordination is solidified, he will be a solid D1 big man. Still a working project.
Kyle Sturdivant, CG, Norcross, 2019: The freshman plays beyond his years with his composure and poise. He oozes and confidence with his ball-handling and scoring ability. He is physical and plays downhill, allowing him to finish at the rim well. However, his go-to scoring is his pull-up jumper. Sturdivant will be one of the top 2019 prospects in Georgia.
David Swillum, SG, Alpharetta, 2017 (pictured above): Quick movement from the guard position. Did a nice job of elevating on his shot. He has a nice frame that allowed him to power through defenders for stop and pop shots. More of a shooter than slasher.
Khalyn Weekley, SG, First Presbyterian Academy, 2018: Speed. That’s the first thing that jumps out with the South Georgia guard. He’s fast and likes to control the tempo. Getting to the rim is his foundation on offense. We’d like to see more development with creativity on the offensive end.
George Wilson, PG, Miller Grove, 2017: When you are a point guard and you limit your mistakes, you are doing a nice job. That’s what Wilson did. Not one to force the issue and played calmly, Wilson logged good minutes in the backcourt over the course of three games.
Evaluations come from a collection our staff of 12 coaches, four HoopSeen.com writers and two on-staff college coaches.
