Fastbreak Friday

We take a look at the visits taking place this weekend across the nation.

Fastbreak Friday

While last weekend was a bit down on the travel front, this weekend brings some star studded visitors to some of the top programs nationally. Like always, Fastbreak Friday attempts to bring to you the most in-depth and informal list of visitors, in the official and unofficial variety, along with potential commitments that could occur in the coming days. This weekend, it is Florida State, Kansas, and Missouri that are bringing in some heavy hitters to campus in hopes of luring one or two to a commitment, now and down the road.

 SUN SHINES ON FLORIDA STATE

The three days ahead at Florida State are vital, to say the least. The Seminoles bring in its three commits in the 2016 class and the trio of top-100 recruits will definitely be doing their very best in handing out their first assists as a part of the ACC program. Jon Isaac, an elite forward with a smooth jump shot and ever-improving skillset, along with Trent Forrest, a jumbo lead guard who is tough-nosed by nature, both head to Tallahassee for their official visit. Joining them but in the unofficial variety is CJ Walker, a native of Indianapolis, who has also already committed to the Noles.

From there, the fun begins as Florida State brings in two mammoths down low. Udoka Azubuike, fresh off of visits to Kansas and NC State these past two weeks, stays in state this time around and hits the FSU campus. Leonard Hamilton and his bunch have been thought of as one of the leaders for the Nigerian center for some time now and this weekend could go a long way in battling off the other bluebloods for him. Not alone, Dewan Huell will remain in the state and see what all the noise is about in Tallahassee. After visiting Miami last weekend, Huell will get the chance to see the Hurricanes play the ACC squad on the gridiron on a nationally televised game. A top-30 recruit in the senior ranks, the U and South Carolina are the others most involved with him. Whether the Seminoles land either of these two is up in the air but what isn’t is the chances of the trio of Isaac, Forrest, and Walker in pushing for the deadly duo inside to take their talents to northwest Florida next fall.

LATE NIGHT AT THE PHOG LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

Late Night at the Phog should be called the Big Night at the Phog as Kansas routinely brings in the heaviest of hitters and did it again where the amount of star power hitting the KU campus is off the charts. Not only are a few five-star seniors heading to Lawrence, but also a bevy of underclassmen studs.

Without a commitment at this time in the 2016 class, things will change for the Jayhawks, like they always do, and Bill Self will see his team finish among the top of recruiting charts come this spring. De’Aaron Fox, a 6-foot-3 guard from Texas, hits campus and it seems as if Kentucky and the Big 12 program are top two for him at the moment. Another Texan heading to KU is Marques Bolden, a big man with a complete skillset and the Jayhawks are deep in the mix for him along with Duke and Kentucky. Right there with them is Schnider Herard, the 6-foot-10 center, where Mississippi State and Purdue are in the hunt with the Jayhawks. Others that they might be fighting an uphill battle for but do bring to campus is alpha dog Harry Giles, who seems to be a Duke lean, along 6-foot-3 lightning scorer Malik Monk, where it may likely come down Oregon, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

Outside of the 2016 class, Michael Porter, a 6-foot-8 forward from nearby Columbia, Missouri, and his good friend, Trae Young, a 6-foot-1 guard who can light it up via the jumper, hit the campus. The Jayhawks are deeply involved for both and it wouldn’t be surprising to see both of these star juniors attend KU in two years. Along with them is Sunshine State natives Chaundee Brown and Wyatt Wilkes, and quality shooter of the ball in the 2017 class with Mitchell Ballock. Two others to keep an eye on are sophomores Courtney Ramey and Carte’Are Gordon, two hoopers that play together on the travel circuit and look to be solid top-100 recruits in the 2018 class.

COMMITMENT PREDICTIONS

While there aren’t as many that could pop off the board compared to past weeks, there still are a few recruits to keep an eye on in regards to potentially making a commitment in the coming days.

It may be a while before a commitment is made but make sure to keep an eye on the duo of uncommitted recruits visiting Florida State this weekend. The Seminoles are top three for both Azubuike and Huell and have been heavily involved with both for a while now.

Mitch Lightfoot remains in the state this weekend and visits Arizona. The 6-foot-8 athletic and tough forward is down to a final five but with the recent decommitment of TJ Leaf, landing Lightfoot becomes even more magnified for the Wildcats.

Mike White is attempting to bring in talent in the frontcourt for next year and he gets a visit from Dontay Bassett this weekend. From California but playing his school ball out at Oldsmar Christian within the Sunshine State, the Gators could be pushing for a verbal out of the athletic and high energy forward.

Seventh Woods remains in his own state, just as well, as he heads to South Carolina this weekend. Down to a final three, it seems that the race for the athletic lead guard is between Frank Martin’s group and UNC.

Staying in the SEC, Mississippi State brings back Mario Kegler to campus this weekend. There has been a lot of talk of a potential marriage between the school and prospect for a few years now and while they’re battling the likes of Arizona State and Indiana for him, a commitment wouldn’t be all that surprising.

A product out of the famed DeMatha Catholic program, Nate Darling heads off to UAB this weekend and it looks like the end is near for him. Battling with the CUSA program is the up-tempo squad, Florida Gulf Coast.
