Ole Miss went outside of its geographic reach on Monday and landed its first backcourt commit in the 2016 class with Breein Tyree. The 6-foot-2 guard from St. Joe’s High School in Metuchen, New Jersey, brings a load of talent and playmaking skills to Oxford and should be someone that can help out immediately due to his toughness and broad contributing abilities in the backcourt.

After cutting down his list to a group of three that included the Rebels, Kansas State, and the nearby UMass program, Tyree felt it was best to give a verbal to Andy Kennedy and his program. Early on in the process and during his underclassman years, the Jersey native had seen a pretty prioritized recruitment for such a young age. For one reason or another, several programs fell off the map with him but after lending out an offer to him back in July, the Rebels became a viable threat for the combo guard’s services next winter.

After running with the Sports U squad on the Under Armour circuit this past summer, Tyree displayed the ability to compete against the very best and a versatile skillset at either guard spot. He can play on and off the basketball and create for others without much of an issue. He does have to take care of the ball a bit more but there aren’t a ton of holes in the senior’s game. Tyree shot nearly 40-percent from behind the 3-point arc and showed the instincts in playing the passing lanes where he averaged close to 1.5 steals per game.

Looking to replace star guard Stefan Moody after his graduation this spring, Tyree looks to be a capable producer for the SEC program. Ole Miss has relied on its guards in past years under the tutelage of Andy Kennedy at the helm and Tyree fits the exact mold of those that have succeeded during their own playing days in Oxford.
