Anfernee Simons rounds up the offers

One of the more intriguing guards out of the state of Florida in the 2017 class might actually be a part of the 2018 class. Anfernee Simons, a 6-foot-1 guard at Edgewater High School, located in Orlando, Florida, is a bit younger for his grade and is open to graduating and then taking a year of prep, thus entering himself into the 2018 class. Regardless of how you look at it, the smooth guard brings a lot of the tools to the table that might make many high-majors pounce on him before everything is said and done with.

Running with the Team Breakdown 16-under crew this past summer on the travel circuit, I first caught a glimpse of the guard out in Las Vegas during his final week of play in July. Getting another glance at the junior at the Each 1 Teach 1 Showcase two weeks back, Simons furthered my stance on him as a quality guard who can play either spot in the backcourt but brings his greatest value to the floor in scoring the basketball.

While he is far from finished growing and could end up at 6-foot-3, Simons has gotten a lot more athletic and explosive at the basket in a very short time. He isn’t super quick but has a quality first step on the attack to the basket and a lethal pull-up game that he can hit with a hand in his face. The native of Florida has the vision to create for others just as well, and due to his efficient scoring abilities and facilitating skills at either guard spot, programs are now getting introduced to the productive guard out of Orlando.

Since the beginning of August, four programs have jumped on board with an offer to the Edgewater guard, including Tennessee Tech, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, and just last week, one from the South Florida basketball program. However, with family in the Nashville region, Simons spoke on his visit to Vanderbilt that took place last Saturday. “It went good. I got to play with the players and I think I would fit their style of play.”

While no offer has been received just yet from the SEC program, Simons spoke on what the staff was telling him during the trip. “They told me that I looked good out there and that I could receive an offer soon.”

While schools like South Florida, FGCU, and Murray State have been in recently for the sleeper guard, Simons was watched by Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams on Wednesday and noted that he is hearing the most often from the Hokies and Commodores thus far.

Wherever Simons does end up calling his year of graduation, expect for a constant worker and a guy that will develop as each year passes on a college campus and someone who can make others better but also score the ball in high volumes but in an efficient manner.
