Raptors escape with 17U American championship at Gibbons
SUWANEE, GA – Playing in any championship game is never easy. The emotions run through individuals like a roller coaster ride.
There are highs and lows, which is exactly what happened during the 17U American title game of Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions.
The SC Raptors Elite North needed a comeback and late free throw to beat the Georgia Stars Select (Davis) 50-49 at Suwanee Sports Academy on Sunday.
This championship game was played from the opening tip like it was going to come down to the team that would make the last shot. The Raptors did get their last scoring opportunity at the line.
Raykym Felder drove to the basket on a mission. Then, on what was considered a questionable call, the freshman guard was fouled. He went to the line with a second to play to make one free throw before missing the second. His basket was enough to seal the game and secure the Most Valuable Player award. Felder finished with nine points. Teammate Tahmir Gadsden chipped in with a game-high 16 points.
The Stars controlled the game with its relentless pressure and solid baskets. They tied the game late and it looked like it was headed to overtime. Things did not workout that way as the Stars had to watch Felder knock down the one free throw.
Just before the Raptors took the lead, the Stars were getting production from Jalen Davis. The junior point guard had a team-high 13 points. He was mixing it up distributing the basketball, while also penetrating to the basket. If they backed off of him he pulled up for several jumpers off the bounce.
Teammate AJ Farrar added to the mix with his 10 points. He was solid from the perimeter and slashing to the basket. Khalen Pinkett chipped in with seven points.
