Kevin Huerter commits to Maryland

Kevin Huerter announced his name onto the national platform with his production throughout the gauntlet that is the Nike EYBL this past summer. Teaming up for the Albany City Rocks program, the 6-foot-4 guard showed off the immediate production and long-term wealth that made him a priority recruit this past year.

After taking a visit to Maryland this past weekend, Huerter decided to end his recruitment and thus, give the Big 10 program another quality presence in the backcourt. There were whispers in the spring that the New Yorker might take a year to prep next year and become a member of the 2017 class. However, with offers from programs like Michigan, Villanova, and Syracuse, of who was looking at the local product as a 2017 class member, the plans all changed.

On Monday, the plans became concrete with Huerter. He will head to College Park next fall and aid in helping Mark Turgeon and his program remain consistent as a winner and a top-10 capable program again for the 2015-2016 season.

What can be expected out of Huerter? A lethal threat from deep as he made 44-percent of his 3-point attempts this past spring in converting on 41 of his long-range shots. However, Huerter is an elite passer of the basketball where he can slide over onto the lead guard spot and make others better, hence the 3.3 assists per game and the 2.5-to-1, assist-to-turnover ratio.

Strength gain will be vital for Huerter but he already scores the ball, rebounds the ball, passes the ball, and averaged over a steal per game, making him one of the more consistent and broad range producers out of the Nike circuit this past summer.

A great get for Maryland on this extended Labor Day weekend should create even further momentum as the Terps host top-25 big man Wenyen Gabriel this coming weekend.
