ACC Spotlight: Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
When it rains, it pours. That easily could have been said the past few weeks when it came to commitments to programs from within the SEC.
That made us think… which conference could take the reins from the SEC and go on its own roll in picking up some quality commitments in the coming weeks? The answer? The Atlantic Coast Conference.
Today we dive into part five of the five-part series as we inspect the conference and where each school is at with recruits moving forward.
VIRGINIA
The days in Charlottesville keep getting better and better. Not only has Tony Bennett and his program won two consecutive ACC regular season titles, they’re already well ahead in 2016 as they have four commitments in the stable with the likes of Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, Mamadi Diakite, and Jay Huff, all of whom should fit the cloth of the program from day one. After holding its elite camp this past weekend and hosting a plethora of the top prospects from the Mid-Atlantic, Virginia is already gearing up for the future for the 2017-2019 classes. They could take one more in 2016 and are involved with prospects like Brandon Robinson and Braxton Blackwell, but there is a lot of wiggle room here as the days the look better and better heading into what should be another winning season at Virginia.
VIRGINIA TECH
The work that Buzz Williams and his staff have done since arriving on campus last spring is nothing short of remarkable. They brought in, what should be, immediate producers from the transfer market in Zach LeDay and Seth Allen, two effective junior college forwards with Johnny Hamilton and Ty Outlaw, and three highly thought of recruits in Chris Clarke, Justin Robinson, and Kerry Blackshear. With the insurgence of talent to Blacksburg, Williams and his crew is sitting a lot more stable than this time last year and have been able to get involved with several prospects for future classes that in past years, the Hokies never would have had a shot at. Scholarships available are very minimal in 2016 and though in the mix for Tony Bradley, Javin DeLaurier, and Curt Jones, a needed commit out of any of the three isn’t a necessity. One name to keep track of with the Hokies is Khadim Sy, an Oak Hill product who exerts his 6-foot-9 frame down low and cleans his area on the glass.
WAKE FOREST
Danny Manning is coming off his inaugural campaign in Winston-Salem after having reeled in a more than quality 2015 class that boasts the likes of potential star worthy bigs, Doral Moore and John Collins, along with its point guard of the future in Gonzaga College star, Bryant Crawford. However, with two commits already in hand for 2016 as Brandon Childress and Richard Washington should supply further talent in the backcourt, all eyes are on local product, Harry Giles. The 6-foot-10 mammoth of a talent will transfer to Oak Hill Academy this fall, but will give his first official visit to the Demon Deacons on September 18. If they can keep the future pro close to home for a year and beat out blueblood programs Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC for him, the shockwaves that it would send through college basketball wouldn’t be fully felt until four or five years from now…that is just how good Giles is and the program changing prowess he could put into effect. Next to Giles, the Deacs are in the hunt for Kobe McEwen, a 6-foot-2 guard from Canada, and another Maple Leaf native in 6-foot-9 big man, Eddie Ekiyor. A former teammate of Giles’, Jalen Johnson, also remains pretty high on Manning’s program.
