ACC Spotlight: Boston College, Clemson, Duke
When it rains, it pours. That easily could have been said the past few weeks when it came to commitments to programs from within the SEC. Our own Garrett Tucker did a phenomenal job of breaking down the recent slew of commits to programs like Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama, and Florida, and while the streak may not be done yet, I pondered, what conference could take the reins from the SEC and go on its own roll in picking up some quality commitments in the coming weeks? My guess…the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In attempting to dissect the next commitment for each program and some of the primary targets at hand, the ACC may be in the driver’s seat as the next program to make a run on the recruiting trail.
We take a look at all of the teams in the ACC this week here on HoopSeen.com and dig deeper into their recruiting efforts in the coming months. Today we look at Boston College, Clemson and Duke.
BOSTON COLLEGE
The Eagles are trying to find their way with the 2016 class, though they already have a commit from North Carolina native, Ty Graves. The 6-foot guard brings a wealth of versatility in the backcourt as he can score the ball at all three levels on the floor and has a calming nature to him where he can produce both on and off the ball. The Eagles are involved with 6-foot-6 power forward Willie Jackson, and in the mix with a slew of New England recruits including Vermont Academy guard Bruce Brown, though it seems as if UMass and Indiana are the programs to beat.
CLEMSON
The Tigers recently received their first commitment in the 2016 class with Scotty Spencer, a 6-foot-5 wing out of Virginia. The Blue Ridge School product should bring some fine upside to the backcourt as he can play either wing spot and has developed a consistent jumper from deep. In adding to the class, the Tigers will welcome in for official visits Peach State native Alex O’Connell, along with South Carolina big man Jordan Bruner, come the month of September. They are also heavily involved with in-state recruit Deriante Jenkins, of whom they can be perceived as one of the leaders for, along with big man John Fulkerson and Brachen Hazen, both forwards that are beginning to see an improving recruitment.
DUKE
Another year, another time around that Coach K and his staff are selectively choosing specific needs that must be filled and offering just a few prospects that they have pursued pretty thoroughly. Jayson Tatum, a 6-foot-8 forward, is already committed as the Missouri native is one of the most polished scorers that the high school realm has seen for some time now. However, the elite talent is soon to be joined by some pretty special talent, just as well. Frank Jackson, a 6-foot-3 guard from Utah, visits the Blue Devils next weekend and the ACC program could receive a commitment out of the five-star talent shortly after. Marques Bolden and Wenyen Gabriel are also coveted by the staff and Duke seems to stand a good shot at either of the big men. However, where all things lead back to is Harry Giles, a 6-foot-10 big man from Winston-Salem. He is the best ballplayer in all of high school basketball and while he is listening to programs like Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, and Wake Forest, it would be a surprising development for Giles to not garner the colors that Duke represents next winter.
