Georgia Youth Basketball Association - Week 1 Recap
What a weekend it was here at the GYBA! I caught Saturday’s action, and it was packed with young talent and great teams kicking off Week 1!
Game of the Day:
Grayson 8th Grade vs. Johns Creek 8th Grade was my game of the day on Saturday, and it featured loads of young prospects.
Johns Creek started the game off hot, leading most of the first half behind their loaded backcourt and Dillon Perkins. However, it wasn’t enough to secure the win against Grayson. Kameron Trotter came alive in the second half and took over the game. He finished with a 24-point double-double, with the majority of his points coming in the second half.
Grayson’s backcourt shifted the momentum in the second half with their press, causing numerous turnovers that led to points in transition. This ultimately secured the win for Grayson. Johns Creek had a chance to win it at the line late in the game but couldn’t convert. It’ll be exciting to watch these two teams over the next few weeks at Suwanee Sports Academy.
Players of the Day:
David Scott was a man among boys in the matchup between Hebron Christian and Chattahoochee. Scott showed there weren’t many areas of his game that he lacks, as he scored from all three levels and completely erased opponents’ shot attempts near the basket. Scott poured in 23 points while also being one of the hardest-working players on the court. Scott is definitely a name we could hear more about across the state in the coming years.
He’s back! Last year, we saw Collins Hills Calan Howard take the 4th grade division by storm and this year he’s back doing what he does. He had 15 points in both blowout wins for the Collins Hill 4th grade team this weekend. Something tells me we’ll be talking about him all season long.
Gainesville’s 8th grade team looks to be a player for the championship early in the season. This weekend, they were led by big man Jaxton Trammell. An old-school classic big man that you do not see as much these days with a nice drop step and impressive ability to drive and kick. Trammell led Gainesville with 16 points in a big win over Brookwood.
The Duo:
The backcourt duo of Braxton Hodge and Chase Griffin shined in Norcross’s win over a strong North Gwinnett team. Both guards did an excellent job controlling the pace of the game, making timely shots, and finding open teammates. This duo is one to watch, even if your kid isn’t playing in their game.
HoopSeenW Top Performers
East Forsyth 6th Grade Girls had a dominant weekend led by Madi Shirley. She was great all weekend long and is awesome getting to her spots and moving without the ball. She had 19 points in the win on Sunday over Johns Creek.
Grayson 5/6th Grade also had a great weekend going 2-0. Adaree Hutchinson led the Rams this weekend and looks to be a major problem for the division. She is an elite point guard that can score and pass at a high level. She had 13 points and a handful of assists in Sunday’s win.
