Two more championships are in the books!

On Wednesday, 4A and A-DII were decided, and Thursday saw 5A and 2A champions hoisting gold in Macon. 

Here’s how it went down. 

5A

Champions

In the inevitable matchup between 5A’s heavyweights, Kell picks up its first state championship in school history with an 61-53 win over Eagle’s Landing. 

After jumping on Eagle’s Landing early, Kell went on a cold stretch that saw big Peyton Marshall relegated to the bench with foul trouble. 

In the third quarter, Eagle’s Landing climbed out of a 14-point deficit thanks to a strong outing from senior guard David Thomas. 

However, Kell’s stars stepped up late and ultimately sealed the deal for the Longhorns. 

They’ll be back…

This Kell roster is primarily driven by juniors. When looking at the championship win, 47 of the team’s 61 points, and 18 of their 27 rebounds were contributed by juniors. 

Next year’s roster should feature CJ Brown, Jaylen Colon, Peyton Marshall and Cannon Richards again. All of those guys have been starters for the Longhorns, and throughout their run to the championship each of the aforementioned players had their shining moments. 

Colon had multiple games with five or more 3-pointers in the playoffs, Marshall had dominant 20-plus point outings in the paint, Richards had 14 points and 7 rebounds in their first-round game, and Brown just capped it all off with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in their championship win. 

Unless something drastic happens over the summer—we’ve seen plenty of crazy things happen in recent years—we’ll be picking Kell to repeat as 5A champs. 

Thomas shines in his future college town

David Thomas is one of the legacy seniors in Georgia. He’s a guy that’ll be talked about in gyms around the Peach for the foreseeable future. It’s easy to see why too. Thomas has been to Macon to play for a 5A championship in three of his four years. The guy spends so much time in Macon that he decided to move there for college when he committed to Mercer. 

As he’s done for most of his high school career, he shined when the lights were brightest. He led Eagle’s Landing with 23 points and 7 rebounds on Thursday night. 

It was Thomas that sparked the run that got Eagle’s Landing back in the game. As he went the Eagles went. 

While they didn’t get the result they wanted, Eagle’s Landing’s star shined a few miles away from where he’ll be playing his college ball. 

2A 

Champions

In the game of the week so far, Westside-Augusta wins back-to-back state championships with an 89-81 OT win over Providence Christian. 

It was a style clash that saw both teams exchange metaphorical blows late. Westside’s senior core of Jalexs Ewing, Khalon Hudson and Aumauri Tillman combined for 75 points. 

MVP

Westside-Augusta’s Aumauri Tillman was the man for the Patriots. When they needed a bucket, he was the guy that provided. He scored from everywhere and did so during the most clutch moments. Tillman went 15 of 30 from the field and connected for four 3-pointers. He finished with a whopping 36 points. 

In addition to his eye-popping point totals, Tillman pulled 7 rebounds. 

Backing him up, Hudson finished with 21 and Ewing added 18.

Storming 3-pointers

This matchup was a clash of styles once it was set in stone. Westside looks to use its athleticism to attack the rim while Providence Christian is a team that wants to pour it in from 3-point land. 

The Storm finished having shot 50% from beyond the arc on 34 attempts. 

Samuel Thacker led the way by going 7 for 12 from the 3-point line en route to 22 points. 

Not far behind, Devin McClain went 5 for 12 and finished with 21 points. 

Both McClain and Thacker hit timely shots toward the end of the game. 

These two guys are killers from beyond the arc, and they can help college programs. McClain is an unsigned senior while Thacker is a junior.
