March to Macon: Five Second-Round Games to Watch in 5A/4A
The march to Macon continues! The elite eight tips across Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday. Here are some of the games that we’re going to be honing in on in 5A and 4A.
Mays at Eagle’s Landing: We’re one step closer to what feels like the inevitable matchup between Eagle’s Landing and Kell in Macon. The Eagles are the favorites to win this game, but Mays has a chance to be a thorn in their side. The Raiders have some great guards, and they can give Eagle’s Landing some trouble if everything goes well for them.
Dutchtown at Kell: If there’s a team that can unseat Kell on their march to Macon, it’s Dutchtown. We’ve seen the Bulldogs disrupt Eagle’s Landing’s undefeated season already, so seeing them take down the other 5A giant wouldn’t be a huge shocker. However, Kell has been dominating teams. Jaylen Colon has made 13 3-pointers during the playoffs so far. If he keeps that heater going, Kell will be too much to overcome.
Jones County at Hiram: Jones County started the season well, and picked up a massive win over Grovetown during that stretch. They've ended their season by playing some of their best ball. They’ve beaten both of their opponents by double figures. Going on the road to Hiram is tough though. The Hornets just put on a dominant performance against a great program in Tri-Cities.
McDonough at Westover: This is another final four rematch from a season ago. Westover got the better of McDonough in that one. McDonough is one of the favorites to win 4A, but going on the road to Westover is not easy. The Patriots made it all the way to Macon last season before losing to Spencer in the 4A championship, so they’re a proven winner during this time of the year. Going down to Albany can trip teams up, but McDonough should be hungry to get their win back.
Pace at Baldwin: There’s a chance of McDonough and Pace meeting in the final four. The two region opponents have tough road games ahead of them though. Pace has to go to Baldwin to take on the Braves. Pace’s Sharman White is one of March’s best winners, and he has a squad that can get him back to Macon. There are always teams from outside of the Atlanta metro that pick off Atlanta teams, and Baldwin could be a disruptor here.
