March to Macon: Meet the 5A No. 1 seeds

Let's meet the No. 1 seeds in the 2023 GHSA 5A state tournament. Each of these teams won their respective region tournament and secured a number one seed in the bracket. Let's meet 'em. 

REGION 1
Bradwell Institute (16-8)
NOTABLE WINS: Coffee (3x), Camden County, Ware County, Tattnall County, Statesboro (2x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Glynn Academy, Tattnall County, Ware County, Griffin, Camden County, Statesboro, Greenbrier (2x)
NOTABLE PLAYERS: TahShaun Frasier, Chris Perry, Elyjah Thurmon
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Big man Elyjah Thurmon is on his path to a big-time football roster spot. His strength in the middle will be a problem for the bracket. 

REGION 2 
Eagle’s Landing (25-1)
NOTABLE WINS: ​​Westside, SW Dekalb, St. Pius X, Jones County (3x), Hillgrove, Marist, Buford, Pembroke Pines (FL), Miami (FL), Riveria Prep (FL), Langston Hughes, Dutchtown, Greenforest
NOTABLE LOSSES: Dutchtown 
NOTABLE PLAYERS: David Thomas (Mercer), Kenneth Brayboy (All-Region), Khylan McKennie (All-Region), Chris Morris (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Chew on this…The program has gone 127-15 over the last five years. This season has been nothing short of outstanding. Their only loss was a 2-point game to rival Dutchtown. To top it all off, they are 9-0 at home. 

REGION 3
McIntosh (20-7)
NOTABLE WINS: South Paulding, Paideia, Northside-Columbus (x3)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Fayette County, Walton, Chattahoochee, Whitewater, Sandy Creek, Union Grove (x2)
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Uche Iloh (3-5A Player of the Year), Brandon Cheri (All-Region), Landon Dolhancyk (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Don’t sleep on them. They are coming into the state tourney with a 13-game win streak. They can really guard, too. 

REGION 4
Decatur (17-8) 
NOTABLE WINS: Lithonia (2x), HEA (FL)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Paideia, Peachtree RIdge, Dutchtown, Pace, Tucker (2x), Lithonia, Langston Hughes
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Quay Wallace (All-Region), Turner Cummings
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: When they are at their best, they are guarding teams very hard from end to end. 

REGION 5
Chapel Hill (20-8)
NOTABLE WINS: Tri-Cities (2x), Riverwood, Mays (2x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Westlake, Pace, Griffin, Milton, Mays, Tri-Cities, Lithia Springs
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Khirus Doucet (Fort Valley State), Kelvin Hunter (All-Region), Oray Towns (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: After starting the season 1-4, the team has gone 19-4. When they play fast, they play their best. 

REGION 6
Kell (23-2)
NOTABLE WINS: Dutchtown, Greenforest (2x), Pebblebrook, McEachern, Mount Vernon, Liberty (NV), Calvary Christian (FL)
NOTABLE LOSSES: West Ranch (CA), Grayson
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Peyton Marshall (Auburn), CJ Brown (All-Region), Jaylen Colon (All-Region), Cannon Richards (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: A well-travelled, well-balanced team, Kell is one of the toughest match-ups in all of the brackets in the state of Georgia. 

REGION 7
Hiram (22-2)
NOTABLE WINS: Carrollton, Cross Creek, Calhoun (3x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Johnson-Savannah, St. Andrew’s
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Jay Boyd (Lincoln Memorial), Walter Matthews (All-Region), Amir Taylor (All-Region), Chase Tyler (All-Region), Aaron Wesley (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Undefeated at home. Undefeated in region. They have a 15-game win-streak. In that streak, they are winning games on an average of 25 points a game. 

REGION 8 
Winder-Barrow (19-8)
NOTABLE WINS: Monroe Area, Heritage Conyers (2x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Mountain View, Brookwood, Berkmar, Mill Creek, Monroe Area, Madison County, Eastside
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Justice Billings (South Georgia Tech), Jeremiah Holloway (8-5A Player of the Year), Jerrin Samuel (All-Region) 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Bulldogs have a strong nine-game win streak going into the state playoffs.
