March to Macon: Meet the 6A No. 1 seeds

Let's meet the No. 1 seeds in the 2023 GHSA 6A state tournament. Each of these teams won their respective region tournament and secured a number one seed in the bracket. Let's meet 'em.

REGION 1

Lee County (24-3)
NOTABLE WINS: Dougherty (2x), Baldwin, Savannah, Mitchell County
NOTABLE LOSSES: Monroe, Sumter County, Tift County
NOTABLE PLAYERS: DJ Taylor (1-6A Player of the Year), Osumane Kromah (1-6A Co-Defensive Player of the Year), Christian Brown (All-Region), Josiah Parker (All-Region), Harrison Skinner (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: In two of their three losses, the team never broke the 30-point mark on offense. When they win, however, they can beat you slow or fast. Very hard team to plan for.

REGION 2

Grovetown (18-8)
NOTABLE WINS: Westside-Augusta, Cross Creek, Perry, Effingham County (2x), Brunswick (3x), Lakeside (2x),
NOTABLE LOSSES: McEachern, Buford, Newtown, Wheeler, Columbus (FL), Tri-Cities, Jones County, Pinson Valley (AL)
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Malik Ferguson (Georgia State), Markel Freeman (Chipola), Derrion Reid, Frankquon Sherman
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: After starting the season 4-8, the Augusta area power has not lost a game in the 2023 calendar year. You could argue this is the deepest team in the state for the 6A division.

REGION 3

Jonesboro (22-3)
NOTABLE WINS: Lexington (SC), Woodward Academy (2x)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Douglass (TN), McEachern, Dorman (SC)
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Devon Rainey (3-6A Player of the Year), Jaquez Akins (All-Region), Montez Redding (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Per usual, this team is deep, tough, will guard like there is no tomorrow and not an easy match-up. The only concern here is gauging their success based on their regular season schedule. Hard to call it.

REGION 4

St. Pius X (22-5)
NOTABLE WINS: Blessed Trinity, Lowndes, Marist, Riverwood
NOTABLE LOSSES: King’s Ridge, Knoxville Catholic (TN), Eagle’s Landing, Archbishop Moeller (OH), Marist
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Spencer Elliott (Tulane), Blake Wilson (Hampden-Sydney)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Four of their losses came in the 2022 calendar year of the schedule and the only loss in 2023 was a one-point heartbreaker to rival Marist. No strangers to post-season success, Pius should be a post-season problem.

REGION 5

Alexander (22-5)
NOTABLE WINS: South Paulding (x3), Etowah, Sagemont (FL), Langston Hughes
NOTABLE LOSSES: Grayson, Western (KY), North Florida Educational Institute (FL), Hoover (AL), Langston Hughes
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Noah Melson (Chattanooga), Braedan Lue (5-6A Player of the Year), Jay’Quan Nelson (All-Region), Marvin McGhee IV
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: This is a team that will absolutely compete. They’re battle-tested and play with a toughness that radiates from their coach Jason Slate. This is one of the best teams in his long coaching career.

REGION 6

Etowah (19-8)
NOTABLE WINS: Cherokee, Cedar Grove, Sandy Creek
NOTABLE LOSSES: Wheeler, Grayson, Greenforest, Gonzaga (DC), Marist, Western (KY), Alexander, River Ridge
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Brandon Rechsteiner (Virginia Tech), Dimitri Angelakos (All-Region), Chase Clemmons (All-Region), Mason Etter (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: An early season gauntlet of a schedule could prove to be a major help as the bracket moves forward. The Eagles did not shrink away from top games. Lessons learned, adjustments were made and Etowah finished strong.

REGION 7
Blessed Trinity (21-6)
NOTABLE WINS: Pope (x3), Alpharetta, Chattahoochee
NOTABLE LOSSES: Mt. Bethel, Walton, St. Pius X, North Cobb, Marist, Alpharetta
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Brigham Rogers (Belmont), Ty Harpring (All-Region), Jackson Lewis (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: You could argue Brigham Rogers is the best big man in the 6A bracket. In the post-season, we’ve seen the best players make the best runs. Will they lean on him in bracket play?

REGION 8

Lanier (23-4)
NOTABLE WINS: Cardinal Ritter (MO), Joliet West (IL), Scottsboro (AL)
NOTABLE LOSSES: Mount Vernon, St. Rita (IL), Winter Haven (FL), Mill Creek
NOTABLE PLAYERS: Jayce Nathaniel (8-6A Player of the Year), Osmar Garcia (All-Region), Tahai Morgan (All-Region)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: A perfect record at home this season is something to pay attention to as we march towards Macon. So is their impressive 18-game win streak.
