Lavel Johnson's top performers from the Statement Session

On Sunday Mal Mundy and the Hoopfest Tour hosted 30 of the top juniors and seniors from the state of Louisiana at Southside High School just South of Lafayette. The talent at the event was superb and a great showcase for the 2021 and 2022 classes in the “Boot”. Below I look at the events top performers, prospects and eye catchers from each class.

Top 2021 Performers

Derrick Tezeno 6’5” Wing North Central: A rangy, long armed, solidly built, athletic, hardnosed wing who had a very strong day. Offensively he’s skilled with the ball and likes to attack the rim, he’s an athletic finisher who plays well in traffic and finishes thru contact, also showed a solid jumper that helps to keep the defense honest, a versatile defender who can switch between guarding guards, wings and bigs, with his long arms, solid build and toughness allowing him to grind it out with bigger opponents when needed.

Jon’Quarius McGhee 6’2” WG Opelousas: McGhee was a strong performer all day, a strong athletic wing whose motor never stops. He showed the ability to score attacking the rim, finishing in traffic and thru contact. His jumper was also clicking as he stepped out and nailed a number of three pointers. In transition he gets out and runs scoring on strong athletic finishes and defensively he’s very active.

Other Top 2021 Prospects

Will Allen 6’8” PF Bonnabel: A long active big who always seems to be around the ball. Allen excels defensively and on the glass and what really caught my eye was his ability to switch out and defend guards. Offensively he operates best in the mid post and showed a nice midrange jumper, he moves up and down the floor very well and hits the offensive boards hard, a solid finisher in traffic he is a very good free throw shooter and even stepped out and hit a couple of threes.

Jourdan Dishmond 6’8” Post Holy Savior: A big bodied, well-built post, who rebounds and scores in the paint. On offense he was active around the paint, showed a solid post game and good hands on the drop off, worked the offensive boards and picked his spots well to get out in transition. A physical post defender who likes to bang who does a better job of taking up space in the paint rather than being a rim protector.

Other 2021 Eye Catchers

Rollin Belton 6’8” Post Ruston

Carter Domingue 6’3” PG St. Thomas More

Jamond Vincent 6’3 WG L.B. Landry

Jaden Shelvin 6’3” PG St. Thomas More

Shammond Bryant 6’6” F Bossier

Top 2022 Performer

Tawasky Johnson 6’0” PG Port Allen: A solidly built quick skilled ball handler who really puts pressure on the defense. He really uses his dribble well and mixes up drives to the rim with short pullups to keep the defense on its heels, he is a strong finisher when he attacks the rim and plays well thru contact, did a really good job of involving and finding his teammates when they were open. Plays with a lot of energy and keeps attacking but plays smartly.

Other Top 2022 Prospects

Kyran Ratliff 6’9” Post Booker T. Washington: A well built, long post, Ratliff was very active, he finds ways to scores without very many post touches, in one game I observed him score over twenty points with no postups, as he is very good at moving to the rim, runs the floor very well, finishes well in the paint and around the rim, and works the offensive glass. Defensively he is an active rebounder, a solid post defender and big time rim protector.

Dionjahe Thomas 6’8” PF Ellender: A broad shouldered, well-built forward, offensively is active and moves well without the ball, runs the floor and hits the boards. Finishes well around the paint and can step out and make the corner jumper. Defensively he moves well, is a solid post defender and an active rebounder.

Percy Daniels 6’9” Post Madison Prep: A tall, big bodied active post who likes to bang and is very active. Moves up and down floor well for someone his size. He is a strong rebounder and an imposing figure in the lane defensively, offensively he showed a solid post game in the limited opportunities he got, hit the glass for put backs and showed good hands when receiving passes.

Other 2022 Eye Catchers

Joe Manning 6’4” WF Bossier

Labree Williams 6’7” Post Calvary Baptist

Jacob Wilson 6’5” WG Lee Magnet

Rayshun McCullar 6’1” PG Huntington

Reginald Stoner 6’1” PG North Central
