A trio of undervalued point guards
It has been said time and time again that the lack of live periods put a damper on the sheer number of scholarships that were offered up during this travel ball season. Prospects across the country were affected by the lack of evaluation time as coaches never got the opportunity to lay eyes on some quality targets. While the peach state boast a great number of early commitments, there are still several quality prospects that remain undervalued.
Travis Burrus, 2021 G, South Cobb: What a summer it was for Team Huncho. The wins drove in the offers for a team that was as well rounded as we've seen in recent memory. One of the main catalyst to such a well oiled machine was the steady play from South Cobb senior guard Travis Burrus. While the highlights may of been left for Andrew McConnell and Marius Ellis, it was often Burrus that steadied the ship. With so many weapons that could dominate any given possession, Burrus found ways to spread the wealth and bring out the best in others. Coaches that consistently watched Team Huncho should have come to place a high level of value in his consistent production.
Shomik Shahjahan, 2021 G, TSF: Shahjahan provides a calming presence over the offense when he's at the helm as both his coaches and teammates can bank on quality decision making. Rarely is there an instance in which Shahjahan misreads a coverage and delivers to the wrong person in ball screen situations. In fact, Shahjahan is one of the better ball screen guards given his ability to make quick reads and deliver in a timely and on point fashion. Despite not being the biggest or the fastest, his ability to manipulate the help defense with his eyes and speed can lend to some easy looks for others.
Jason Edwards, 2021 G, Parkview: If you give Edwards the ball and step out of the way then it may be as good as your favorite offensive set. Few available guards have the ability to get downhill and put pressure on the defensive the way that I have routinely seen from the Parkview guard this season. Edwards high scoring junior campaign raised his expectations this summer and to his credit he lived up to his billing as one of the better down hill scorers. Edwards scoring transferred well into the summer as he seemed to make his mark regardless of who he suited up for over the weekend. With a quick twitch burst and a high level of confidence, Edwards made up for his lack of natural playmaking with an explosive knack for putting the ball in the hole.
