Bob #Gibbons Tournament of Champions Spotlight: Keon Johnson
2020 Bell Buckle (TN) Webb School guard Keon Johnson had a superb weekend at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions last weekend. In turn, he was recognized as one of the top performers from the event.
As good as the 6-foot-5 guard has been in the past few years, Johnson showed he has improved his game even more and taken it to a new level while leading the Nashville-based EAB squad. He is a more efficient and confident shooter, as he knocked down multiple 3's in each game over the course of the weekend. Add that with his freak athleticism, defensive ability, and high basketball IQ and you have a quality prospect.
It's no secret why some of the top basketball programs in the country find themselves in the hunt for his pledge. Johnson, the No. 1 overall prospect in Tennessee's 2020 class, is down to Ohio State, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Johnson took the time to break down each of his three finalists at Gibbons and explain what interests him about the programs.
Ohio State: "I have a real good relationship with the assistant coach that came from Vanderbilt, Jake Diebler. He feels that I am a great fit to their system and education. Coach Holtmann feels that I can play a combo guard as far as rebounding and defending all five spots at Ohio State. He likes how I fit in the Big 10."
Diebler was a late addition to the Buckeye staff after former assistant coach Mike Schrage landed the head coaching job at Elon. Without Diebler, Ohio State probably isn't in the mix for Johnson's commitment. That says a lot about their relationship at this point in Johnson's recruitment.
Tennessee: "Tennessee is close to home and a real good program. Coach Barnes has put guys in the league with his player development. They have been one of the top programs around recently."
During Gibbons, Tennessee pledge Corey Walker was also in attendance and had an impressive weekend. Johnson said the two have talked but Walker isn't pressuring him with his recruitment.
Virginia: "Virginia's school is a lot similar to my high school as far as education. They obviously have a really good basketball program and I really like Coach Bennett. We have a great relationship and he has told me how I could succeed at Virginia."
Johnson hopes to make a visit to Ohio State in the next few weeks. He has already been to Tennessee and Virginia.
Following the summer travel season, Johnson will look to get his recruitment out of the way. The four-star prospect has already set a decision date for his college commitment.
"My decision day is August 6th. That's when I'll make my announcement," he said.
