Jamir Chaplin to South Florida: Q&A with our HoopSeen staff.
Jamir Chaplin ended his recruitment today with his commitment to Brian Gregory's South Florida Bulls. Our HoopSeen staff spoke with Chaplin to gain some insight into his decision to call USF his new home.
Q: "Where have you decided to play the next four years and why"
Chaplin: "I'm choosing to commit to the University of South Florida. That program really fits me. Especially the family, the chemistry and the coaches. How they treat their players. The bond between the players and the coaches. The brotherhood between the players. That whole organization is a family. You can tell that the coaches really, really love their guys. They'll do anything for their guys."
Q: "You mentioned it feeling like a family, and the way the coaches treated you and the players that are on the team now. Was there a moment where that sunk home for you?"
Chaplin: " When the players came and got me and took me to the crib and showed me around Tampa, you could tell. I was asking them questions like "how is coach?" And they were telling me like he's the man. That coach is really good. You could tell by how they communicated with each other. You can tell with a group of kids by how they gell together. That's what I saw most of my visit. I'm really loving that."
Q: "Was there anybody involved in your decision that guided you through this process and if there is a person, what were some of your conversations along the way?"
"My mom and my stepmom really got to the point of asking the coaches if we had the academic part for Jamir. They were really focusing on is he going to get his degree. Does he have his major? So the women in my life were worried about the academic part. Of course, my dad. Not more important but his mind was towards the basketball part. He helped me out with basketball part and stuff like that. "
Q: When did you notice in your career that you had a legitimate chance on playing at the next level?
"My dad always told me that I'm good enough to play at a high level. I believed him. I really believed him. So I really didn't have an offer that told me I would go to the next level I just knew that if I played my hardest and kept grinding and grinding and getting better and better then the colleges would notice and be like yes I want him or they would try to recruit me. My dad instilled in my mind that if you're a hard worker and you keep sharpening your iron and keep perfecting your craft then the colleges would come."
Chaplin has been given tons of well-earned praise over his high school career from our HoopSeen staff. The 6'5 wing has a surplus of athleticism that will help him transition over to the next level. Quality experiences with Stackhouse Elite and Meadowcreek should also shorten the learning curve as just last year he was a catalyst in Meadowcreek's state championship run.
Chaplin's commitment gives the Bulls their second in the class alongside 6'8 Oak Hill forward BJ Mack.
