UNC-Wilmington lands commitment from 2018 PG Kai Toews
First-year head coach C.B. McGrath landed his first pledge in the 2018 class Monday evening, as 2018 Northfield (MA) Mount Hermon point guard Kai Toews announced his commitment to UNC-Wilmington Monday.
Toews, a talented pass-first point guard, is a big recruiting win for McGrath and the Seahawks in year one on the job.
"I have a great connection with the coaching staff, especially C.B.," Toews told HoopSeen.com. "They never pressured me to commit or anything. They understood that it was a big decision and that is was going to take some time to consider it all."
Throughout the recruiting process, Toews developed a strong relationship with McGrath. In the end, that relationship paid off for the Seahawks.
"C.B. has coached at the highest level and seen the best of the best, so I felt that he would give me the best advice on how to succeed at the next level. As a point guard, if there is one thing I have learned at Northfields Mount Hermon, it's important to have a good relationship with your head coach, and I feel like I can build a strong connection with C.B."
Toews took an official visit to UNC-Wilmington in early August. After also taking official visits to Wofford and Delaware, the 6-foot-1 point guard returned to campus this past weekend for an unofficial visit.
"I didn't get to play pickup with the players in early August, so I decided to visit again to make sure I fit in with the team. Sure enough, I felt a great connection with the player," he explained.
Toews was impressive at #BOTS, as he displayed his high basketball IQ and passing ability. The lead guard did an outstanding job of distributing the ball to his teammates and putting them in positions to score. Despite being a pass-first player, Toews also showed a consistent shot from the perimeter.
Toews is UNC-Wilmington's first commitment in the 2018 recruiting cycle.
