#Gibbons Player Spotlight: D.J. Thorpe

T.J. Ford Elite made the eastward trip from Austin, Texas to participate in the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions yet again this season. In their first game of the weekend on Friday night, 2019 Lake Travis (TX) big man D.J. Thorpe impressed in a win.

Thorpe, a 6-foot-8 big man, is the son of former Houston Rocket and NBA All-Star power forward Otis Thorpe. The younger Thorpe is beginning to show flashes of how his father dominated the NBA years ago.

Thorpe played very well with his back to the basket around the goal. With a sturdy frame and a solid set of hands, the sophomore was a load to handle for opposing defenders. He was effective finishing through contact, but his ability to pass out of the post was even more impressive, as he racked up several assists to teammates cutting down the lane for easy baskets.

Despite being a youngster, Thorpe already is drawing plenty of college interest. He currently holds two scholarship offers.

"I have offers from Oklahoma State and Tennessee," Thorpe told HoopSeen.com following a win Friday night. "Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia Tech are some of the schools showing high interest."

While it's still early in the process, if Friday night's viewing at #Gibbons is any indication, Thorpe will be highly sought after by several Big 12 and SEC programs.
