adidas Spotlight: Romeo Langford
Romeo Langford led the adidas Gauntlet in scoring at the 17U level over the weekend. That shouldn’t come as a big surprise really. The five-star guard from Indiana is one of the top players on the three stripes circuit.
His weekend started off with a match-up against fellow five-star and top five resident Zion Williamson. Langford scored 28 points against SC Supreme and Williamson.
The next game Langford did struggle against Team BBC's terrific backcourt of Immanuel Quickley and Montez Mathis. Langford shot 2-12 from the floor to the tune of 11 points. He didn't play against Team Bradley NW Panthers.
In his final game of the event, Langford put on a show against YIIS TX Future. He scored 35 points on 12-22 shooting.
The blue bloods spent a good amount of time watching Langford get buckets. Archie Miller was there to see him for the first game of the Live Period on Friday night. So was Mike Krzyzewski, Bill Self and Roy Williams. John Calipari also spent Sunday watching him play.
But keep note of this - Vanderbilt head coach Bryce Drew watched him, too. The Commodores were a constant presence at his games.
During one of the media scrums, Langford made sure he mentioned Vandy among the schools in the mix for his services.
“They have been showing a lot of love and every time they come, they bring their whole coaching staff. I really appreciate that,” Langford said. “The coaching staff is a really nice, young coaching staff. I like the coaches.”
Langford said he’s only been on the campus of Louisville since the new year. Coaches from Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina and Vanderbilt all made in-home/in-school visits this month.
“I’d like to cut my list by the end of the summer but if I don’t, I don’t,” Langford said.
Five schools, Langford says, will ultimately make that final cut. What’s his filtering process?
“The first thing I look at when it comes to school is the education aspect,” Langford said. “And then the coaching staff, if I can trust them and my mom can trust them. And if they can treat me as they would treat their own child. And the roster.”
As the trend of the top prospects is to wait until the second signing period to ink scholarship papers, Langford said he’s going to go on his own timeline to make that final decision.
“You have to take as long as you need because this is a decision that is going to change your entire life,” he said. “However long it takes, it takes.”
