Tre Wood garners heavy attention
The need for a lead guard that can take care of the basketball but also make others better in various situations is always at the forefront of many college programs priorities in any given recruiting class. Tre Wood, a 6-foot lead guard out of St. John’s College High School, possesses the exact traits and thanks to his continued progressions, the native of the DMV has seen his stock steadily improve in recent months.
Settling into the lead guard spot at St. John’s College this winter replacing the giant void left by now Maryland freshman star Anthony Cowan, a lot has been expected out of Wood. However, the 2018 guard has passed early tests thrown at him and over the weekend at the National Hoops Festival, the quick and aggressive floor general showed just why he has rattled in a handful of college offers already.
Despite the fact that the 6-foot listing of him might be a little generous, Wood has a strong, compact frame that he uses nicely along with his quick burst in getting past the first line of defense without an issue. While his jumper, or lack thereof, remains a work in progress, the toughness out of the improving junior is evident. Gifted with great vision and playmaking abilities, Wood excels best whenever the game speeds up as he can spot the open teammate across the floor and make the accurate pass that leads to the easy basket.
Following his 15 point, five assist, and three rebound outing, Wood spoke on the transformation that he has taken his game through in recent months. “I want to be more aggressive,” the product of the Team Takeover program stated. “I have just been trying to take my game to the next level and show that I have the ability to make my shots when I am open.”
Heading into an all-important junior campaign, several programs have jumped into the fray for the playmaking guard. “I have offers from Iowa, St. Joe’s, ODU, Penn State, Manhattan, Towson, Rice, and JMU,” Wood said. Add that to further interest from the likes of Providence, Virginia and Florida and it would look like the recruitment of Wood is just heating up, a process that will play itself out during his final season on the travel circuit this summer.
