Terrence Williams makes his first statement
The Gonzaga DC Classic kicked off on Friday evening as the event once again played host to some of the top teams and prospects from the east coast and Midwest. While there were a few performances that were expected, it was a freshman out of Steve Turner’s Gonzaga program that impressed the most.
Running with a loaded but older Gonzaga College High bunch, a squad that is bolstered by top-75 Miami signee Chris Lykes, Penn commit Eddie Scott, Penn State junior commit Myles Dread, and top-50 junior guard Prentiss Hubb, it was actually a name that we did not know much about that did the most damage. Terrence Williams, a 6-foot-7 power forward that is already super productive from 15-feet and in, made a major statement with his final box score numbers and the way that he goes about playing the game.
While he does not have elite size or length for his spot on the floor, what Terrence Williams did on his home court, in front of a litany of high-major coaches, was nothing short of impressive. Sure, the Gonzaga freshman has played in highly watched contests with his Team Takeover travel team this past spring and summer but on the floor on Friday, Williams created great momentum for what can be in the years ahead.
A hard-nosed and tough forward, Williams knocked down a three off of the pick and pop, scored on a balanced mid-range jumper off the elbow, was more than active and instinctive near the basket and on the boards, and was more than willing to get on the floor for the loose ball attempt. Add it all up and a final stat line of 14 points, eight rebounds, and two assists gives insight on just how valuable the DMV native can be.
Seeing that he is just now playing in his first few high school games, the college recruitment process has not had the chance to begin. “Right now, all I have gotten is a letter from George Mason,” Williams stated. Expect that all to change due to what the 6-foot-7 freshman can do on the court. “I have inside-out abilities, I can find the mismatch, can go inside but outside when a bigger defender is on me, and if you need a go-ahead bucket, I can do that.”
The DMV has never been short for talent and on Friday evening, the Gonzaga College High floor was the perfect springboard for what could be a fun, well-followed recruitment for Terrence Williams.
