Solomon Uyaelunmo primed for a jump
The state of Florida is always chock full of talent in any given year. Head to the southeast portion of the state and the area continues to brim with talent as there is already a litany of seniors that have signed for high-major programs as members of the 2017 recruiting class. The junior class may not be as strong nationally but one name that is due to be spoken on more often is Solomon Uyaelunmo, a 6-foot-8 power forward at Calvary Christian Academy.
Running with a loaded high school bunch this winter alongside committed frontcourt pieces in Butler bound Jerald Bulter his older brother by one year, Victor Uyaelunmo, who will head to USC next fall, the chances of a run to the state tournament in March is pretty evident. During an early season viewing of the team, it was Butler and the older Uyaelunmo brother that did the most damage early on but it might be the younger sibling that has the best upside of the trio.
A 6-foot-8 power forward with a ready college frame as the Nigerian born big man has added on tons of muscle to his already compact physique as he sits at 235-pounds, it is impressive watching the junior move throughout the floor and defend away from the basket.
More of a perimeter based forward with a deceptive set of ball skills, Uyaelunmo is capable of taking his man from off the bounce, playing the high post and hitting the open teammate within the half-court setting, knocking down the intermediate jumper, and scoring in the lane following the effective up-fake move within traffic. The motor is already in place and so is the solid fundamental set that should enable for an even more impressive skillset to be put to greater use in the coming years.
Having seen some of his teammates and more importantly, his brother, go through the recruiting process already, Uyaelunmo gave his feelings on where he stands with things. “I just want to keep working and get better so when schools do see me, they’ll have no doubts,” he said.
On the recruiting front, due to his versatility, upside, and solid grades in the classroom, the 6-foot-8 junior gave insight on who he speaks with the most often on the college front. “I talk with Brown, Washington, Columbia, Rutgers, Memphis, and FIU a good bit,” the prospering Calvary Christian product stated. “I just want a good program and a good academic school where I can fit in that feels like a family; plus, a coach that understands me and the way that I play.”
As schools begin to close out their 2017 classes, expect for greater eyes and more offers to be dished to Solomon Uyaelunmo as he appears to be one of the top prospects out of the Sunshine State from the junior class.
