Trey Wertz has his break out moment

The Providence Day basketball program has been one built on solid ground over the years and despite the loss of now Tennessee freshman big man Grant Williams, the Chargers have continued to reach great success on the playing floor. This past weekend at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, two more quality wins were achieved thanks to the emergence of Trey Wertz.

A long bodied and graceful off-guard, Wertz has loads of upside and talent at his fingertips. Graced with an excellent feel for the game but an evolving jump shot, the North Carolina native impressed in every which way possible during his time on the floor in Charlotte.

Kicking the event off on Friday, Wertz did most of his work as a playmaker when placed on the ball where he does a great job of getting his teammates involved within the half-court setting. Not an explosive athlete but rather graceful in the lane, the 6-foot-4 junior has an excellent runner game and nifty mid-range scoring prowess that he uses nicely to score over the taller bigs in the painted area.

Fast-forward to Saturday evening and Wertz was rather tremendous. He began the game with four made 3-point jumpers in the first quarter and when his feet are set, the Providence Day junior is pretty much automatic out to 20-feet. He does a good job of hitting the glass and due to his length and solid lateral abilities, can become a well-rounded ballplayer that can guard various spots on the perimeter.

Finishing with 30 points and six rebounds off of 12-of-18 shooting from the field, Wertz spoke on where things stand with his college recruitment. “Right now, I have seven offers from Clemson, Charlotte, Rice, Richmond, La Salle, Tulane, and Old Dominion,” the intriguing junior noted. “I went to Clemson and Virginia Tech recently and also visited Virginia and Stanford over the summer.”

Drawing an assistant coach from Stanford to his breakout outing in Charlotte on Saturday evening and boasting major grades in the classroom, look for Wertz to continue to emerge as a major name out of the Tar Heel State and begin to accumulate more and more impressive offers in the coming months.
