Kentucky stays hot with PJ Washington
Rebounding has been one of the top statistical categories that tend to correlate from level to level. Hence, the value of PJ Washington has never been clearer and after sifting through the process and narrowing down his list of schools to a group of three, the Findlay Prep product made it a double whammy type of day for the Kentucky Wildcats.
After securing the talents of Nick Richards, a five-star center, earlier in the day, the Wildcats landed yet another top-30 and five-star recruit in the frontcourt, this time coming in the form of PJ Washington. Albeit undersized standing at 6-foot-7 and most effective at the power forward position on the floor, the Texas native makes up for things with elite length as he sports a 7-foot-3 wingspan, phenomenal instincts, and quality motor within the interior.
Ten years ago, the dreaded tweener label would have been given to Washington. Now, the five-star recruit has become a giant commodity as he fits the ideal, small-ball 4-man position as he can guard smaller defenders away from the basket, but has the length and strength in holding his ground and guarding others bigger and taller than him.
One of the top producers during his upbringing, Washington is nicely polished as a 15-foot and in weapon within the half-court setting. A winning pedigree is also in the fold where the 6-foot-7 forward has won on the high school, travel, and international scenes, the latter being thrown into account thanks to his time with the USA Basketball family.
This past summer on the Nike circuit, the Team Penny star thrashed his opponents in the paint where he secured 11 rebounds in less than 24 minutes of action, was a super-efficient scorer as he made 62-percent of his field goal tries where he chipped in with close to 18 points per contest. Throw in his two assists and a block and steal in any given game and the versatility and broad range of production skills from the Findlay Prep star is as good as it gets.
The second commitment in the 2017 class as Washington will joined recently committed big man Nick Richards, look for the Wildcats to heavily track a number of lead and off-guard pieces in the coming months as they remain involved for the likes of Hamidou Diallo, Shai Alexander, Trae Young, Quade Green, and Lonnie Walker.
