Old Dominion kicks off 2017 with Michael Hueitt

Drawing a blank thus far in the 2017 class, Old Dominion made its first strike today in landing one of the best shooters from the senior ranks. Michael Hueitt, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard that has become known for his pristine, perimeter jumper, a shot that he can hit with range and with a contested hand in his face, called the Conference USA program his future home beginning next fall.
A long and slender bodied guard that has yet to fill out physically, Hueitt more than makes up for things in his ability to take over a game with his jumper. However, the Carolina native isn’t just a one trick pony as uses his length and instincts to rebound the ball and due to his underrated toughness and quickness, can become a versatile defender at either guard spot in the backcourt.
Running with the Team CP3 squad this past summer on the Nike circuit and alongside top ranked big man Wendell Carter, Hueitt was able to further his stock with impressive spurts during the most heightened of contests. Competing against the very best throughout the high school realm all summer long, Hueitt finished the travel season as the top shot maker of the ball from 3-point range.
Making 56 3-pointers off of nearly 48-percemt shooting from behind the arc, Hueitt was a model of efficiency and should be welcomed by open arms by the staff in Norfolk. Last year, the Monarchs suffered to find a go-to weapon on the perimeter which made things even more difficult for star guard Trey Freeman to find the proper driving lanes to go to work. While the premier scorer of the ball is now on the Detroit Pistons camp roster, the addition of Hueitt should enable for much easier offensive possessions for Jeff Jones’ crew in the years ahead due to his scoring prowess. “They will use me a lot for perimeter scoring but also in many others ways instead of just being seen as a shooter,” Hueitt stated about his role early on in Norfolk.
While many pursued the Carolina native, the 6-foot-2 guard felt a strong connection with the coaching staff and the chance to contribute early on ended up winning out in the Monarchs favor. “It is just a great place to be,” the Team CP3 product stated. “I love the coaching staff and I will make an impact whenever I get there.”
The first commitment in the 2017 class for Old Dominion, while a few high-major schools were involved throughout, the Monarchs picked up a vital piece in the form of Michael Hueitt, a lethal, elite shooter of the ball that will bring immediate shot-making abilities to the 757 next year.
