Old Dominion keeps Marquis Godwin close to home

Fresh off of coming back onto the market after backing away from his verbal commitment to the University of Richmond, Marquis Godwin has decided to swiftly end his recruitment once again. While he won’t be playing out of the state, or the area, the 6-foot-5 wing made it official by committing to Old Dominion on Thursday.

One of the best shooters not just on the east coast, but in all of America out of the 2017 class, Godwin is someone that has prided himself on his ability to single handedly win games for his team because of his perimeter prowess. He has revamped his game of late in becoming a better secondary ballhandler within the half-court setting and a much better athlete at the basket on the dunk attempt. However, the Hampton High product’s true value comes via the jump shot.

Finishing out his travel career running with the Boo Williams Summer League bunch, the 757 native showed just how great of a shooter he really is. Averaging a clip below double digits on the season, Godwin connected on over 35-percent of his perimeter jumpers as he made over two 3-point jumpers per contest. Becoming a better rebounder of the ball and playmaker is in need but due to the recent trend for the need of perimeter scorers, Godwin fits the bill for the Monarchs.

The second commitment in the 2017 class for the CUSA gang, Godwin joins fellow sharpshooter Michael Hueitt in creating, what might be, the best shooting duo committed to one school heading into the early signing period in a few weeks. Expect for ODU to remain in the hunt for an interior piece but at the time being, stay optimistic about its duo of elite shooters headed to campus next fall.
