Javan Johnson elects for Troy
2017 Decatur (AL) Austin wing Javan Johnson had a strong showing in July with Team Carroll, and, as a result, he took his recruitment to the next level. Wednesday evening, he made things official by giving his verbal pledge to in-state program Troy.
"I felt at home when I walked on campus at Troy," Johnson told HoopSeen.com. "I really bonded well with the players. They have a really good team this year, and I feel like it is a good situation."
Standing 6-foot-6, Johnson has tremendous upside and his best basketball is ahead of him. With an excellent skill-set and the ability to shoot the ball, Johnson could be a major steal for the Trojans in the Sun Belt. The coaches expect him to come in and play a vital role as a freshman.
"Coach [Phil] Cunningham said they are going to be putting the ball in my hands with a lot of ball screen actions and letting me make plays. They also said I will be running off screens for 3's. They just want me to be versatile and be me."
Johnson was a focal point for Austin High School last season. This year, he will be counted on to do the same as the Black Bears are expected to compete for a state championship in 6A.
Johnson chose Troy over scholarship offers from Austin Peay and South Alabama, among other schools. He is the first verbal pledge for the Trojans in the 2017 class.
