Obiagu breaks down final six

Ikey Obiagu, one of the best shot-blockers in prep basketball, is down to six schools.

The 7-footer from Decatur (GA) Greenforest Christian told HoopSeen.com on Wednesday afternoon that he is down to Baylor, Maryland, Florida State, Long Beach State, North Carolina State and Georgia Tech.

He’s been a busy prospect on the visit trail, too. Obiagu has been to Baylor, Maryland, Florida State and Georgia Tech already. Those visits helped collect the knowledge to place the four schools in his top six.

NC State, a relatively new program in the program, and Long Beach State will likely receive visit, Obiagu said.

We asked the top 100 national prospect to explain why each of the schools made the cut and what he likes about them.

Baylor: “When I was on campus, I most of the players that were on campus at the time. They seemed like they were really good people. I met with the coaches and I’ve watched them play over the years. They play zone and I think that will really help me. I think i can do what I do best in that. Plus, they give their posts a lot of post touches. I like that system of play. Nice campus and nice coaches, too.”

Maryland: “They have a really good history. Coach Turgeon, coming from Texas A&M and he did a good job with DeAndre Jordan. Plus, Maryland has been a really good school for bigs. They have a reputation for developing bigs. They have a really nice campus. I’ve been there three times. I’ve developed a relationship with the head coach and their staff.”

Georgia Tech: “I’ve been on an official visit to them. They are only 35 minutes away from home. I like the new coaches they got…Usually takes long for the head coach to start recruiting you but with him he didn’t. He started recruiting me really quick. We’ve had a long discussion about how he was going to develop me and they don’t have a lot of bigs so I’m going to play right away there.”

Florida State: “The are close to home, like a four hours drive. They’ve recruited me since the ninth grade. And they’ve done a good job with other bigs. They have a really good campus. Every year I take a tour to their campus. I can’t count how many times I’ve been there. I’m really comfortable with Coach (Leonard) Hamilton. He’s a really good coach.”

NC State: “I don’t really know much about their basketball but I’ve met their coaches a couple of times. Hopefully, I can visit them…in October to see what they are all about.”

Long Beach State: “(Assistant coach) Myke Scholl has been recruiting me since the ninth grade. I’ve developed a relationship with him. I think I’ll take a visit to there some time.”

Obiagu has an official visit scheduled for Sept. 23-25 to Baylor. That is the only visit he has set at the moment.

What will push the final school over the edge?

“I want to play right away and develop and utilize their bigs on both ends the floor. I want to play for good coaches,” Obiagu said.

And what about a timeline? Well, that’s open.

“For now, this is the six,” Obiagu said. “I don’t know exactly when I’m going to make my decision.”
