Andrew Nembhard displays unbelievable promise
The name of Andrew Nembhard is going to get tossed around quite a bit these next few years and beyond. A budding sophomore from north of the border, the 6-foot-2 floor general already exhibits great size and an unbelievable feel for the game that has allowed for him stand out amongst his older peers through two days at the adidas Nations in Anaheim, California. Expecting to come to the states this fall, Nembhard caught us up to speed with his recruitment and gave further assessments of what he exactly brings to the hardwood.
Running with the UPlay Canada 16-under squad alongside elite 2019 wing RJ Barrett, Nembhard has already begun his story on the college front bringing in heavy attention from some of the best programs nationally. During his stint last month at the Nike Peach Jam, head coaches from some of the top blueblood programs were present for the two studs out of the sophomore class, giving further insight as to how good the duo can and should be.
Thus far in California, Nembhard hasn’t backed down one iota from his older counterparts. Playing against guys two and three years older than him, the impressive floor general has displayed unbelievable passing skills and an elite floor sense. He rarely ever turns the ball over and the setup artistry out of the productive prospect is more than solid. While he does need to shoot it more consistently in keeping the defense honest, it is the mature mindset, play making skills, and change of speeds dribble that allows for Nembhard to take control of any given contest that he suits up in.
About 99.9-percent sure that he will be headed to Montverde Academy this fall, as Nembhard told us, the 6-foot-2 prospect spoke on what he exactly brings to the playing floor. “I am a calm player. I can lead my team and make others around me better but also score it when I have to,” the facilitating point guard said.
Born in Aurora, Ontario, while no visits have been made just yet, several could be taken now that Nembhard is headed to the states. In the meantime, the offer list has continued to grow as he rattled off the schools that have already jumped on board. “Baylor, USC, Washington, Oklahoma, Villanova, Stanford, and Florida,” Nembhard noted as to who all has offered him up until this point.
Where academics will be a giant selling point for the Canadian guard, on the floor, Nembhard is no laughing matter. Studious of the game and those that come from his country, he spoke on some of those that he watches and draws things from. “I try to take a little from the players in the NBA,” Nembhard said. “From Canada, I like Corey Joseph and Tyler Ennis. Corey Joseph because he can score the ball but he also really defends. Tyler Ennis is just so smooth and knows how to control the game. I also really like CP3 (Chris Paul) from the NBA.”
RJ Barrett made major noise during his inaugural stint at Montverde last winter. Expect the same to be felt with Andrew Nembhard this coming year, him being the best passer in the 2019 class from the continent that is North America.
