SEC schools chasing 2017 guard Jamal Johnson
For the past few years, 2017 Birmingham (AL) Spain Park guard Jamal Johnson has had tons of college coaches keeping close tabs on him. In fact, the majority of the SEC is after him and will be watching when the April evaluation period starts next week.
Johnson, a 6-foot-4 combo guard, showcased his all-around skills as a utility guard at the Norman Parker Showcase. He also outlined the latest in his recruitment.
“I have offers from Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Wake Forest, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, UAB, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale. Vanderbilt’s previous staff had offered, too,” Johnson told HoopSeen.com. “LSU and Penn are a couple of the schools showing interest.”
While a host of schools are recruiting Johnson, a couple of schools have already made him a priority and stick out amongst the rest.
“Ole Miss calls a lot. I talk to Coach [Tony] Madlock and Andy Kennedy a bunch. Alabama, Wake Forest, and Harvard call a lot too.”
Over the course of the season, Johnson was able to tour a lot of the schools recruiting him. One of the campuses he saw was Ole Miss.
“I went to Ole Miss when they played Georgia and Stefan Moody hit a game-winner. It was awesome. I got a chance to see the new facility and see a great game,” he explained.
Johnson also visited LSU, Alabama, Mississippi State, UAB, and Vanderbilt. However, there are some more places he wants to see in the future.
“Maybe go to Ole Miss again, and then I’ll probably go to Alabama some more. Wake Forest is another one of the schools I want to visit. Hopefully I can make that soon.”
