Levi Cook calls DePaul home
With the college basketball season now complete, the majority of schools throughout the nation are looking to complete their rosters for next season. Some go the junior college route, others lure in transfers, while with DePaul, Dave Leitao and his bunch tapped into the graduating high school senior crop. On Tuesday morning, Levi Cook, the number-30 ranked prospect out of the state of Florida, made it official by giving his verbal to the Blue Demons.
A native of West Virginia and a one-time commit to WVU, Cook has been a relatively well-known name for some time now. After finishing out his high school career at Huntington Prep last spring, the 6-foot-9 big man decided to take a year of prep at Elev8 Prep this past fall. Suffering a torn-ACL a year ago, the back to the rim big man has lost over 50 pounds and is on the proper track with his physical stature and in doing so, has become a lot more productive facing the basket and whenever the game speeds up.
While Cook has been all over the map with his schooling, he will now head to the Midwest where it was a certain sell that really drew the West Virginia native to the Windy City. “I love how they are in the Big East,” he told HoopSeen. “I felt at home during my visit, I felt very comfortable with everybody that I met, and I loved the strength coach and the academic team.”
The Elev8 Prep big man does still have to lose some further weight in order to compete at the highest level next college basketball season, though he does bring a decently polished skillset from 15-feet and in. He can hit the mid-range jumper, score over either shoulder in the post, and understands how to seal appropriately on the post-up attempt and on the rebound chance.
Now the fourth member of DePaul’s 2016 class, Cook joins Algevon Eichelberger Jr. in the frontcourt, along with Devin Gage and Brandon Cyrus in the backcourt, establishing itself as a quality crop of incoming talent to the Chicago-based program.
