Sparkman repeats as Huntsville City Classic champions

HUNTSVILLE, AL — For the second year in a row, the Huntsville City Classic championship trophy will reside at Sparkman High School.

The Senators (15-4) were crowned champions of the 40th annual event on Thursday evening after defeating Mobile’s Baker High School by a score of 64-52 in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Huntsville High School.

Sparkman raced out of the gates quickly and led 13-2 at one point in the first quarter. That lead was consistent throughout the game as the Senators led 22-10 at the end of the first intermission and 38-25 at halftime.

Sparkman’s win was a team effort all around but no one shined more than senior Will Hawkins. The lengthy wing acted as a Swiss Army knife for the Senators on both ends of the floor. While he paced his team with a team-high 17 points, his defensive prowess will be what people talk about the most. The 6-foot-3 wing did a phenomenal job on Baker’s Labaron Philon, making things difficult for him from start to finish.

Fellow senior Karmelo Montgomery chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds of his own for Sparkman and Kahleel Green and Trayton Berger also added nine points each.

Baker, who drops to 13-4 on the season, made an impressive run to the championship game behind some dazzling performances from Labaron Philon and crew. The four-star guard finished with a game-high 29 points for the Hornets in defeat.
