Previewing the NCHSAA 3-A State Championship

With this being championship week in North Carolina at the public school level, we take a look at the 3-A classification.

Freedom HS (29-1) vs Westover HS (30-0) - Saturday, 7:35 PM at Reynolds Coliseum at North Carolina State University

Freedom High School out of Morganton will take their 29-1 record to Raleigh and take on Westover High School for the 3-A state title. Their only loss this season came from the hands of South Caldwell. 

This season, James Freeman has been the thoroughbred for the Patriots this season averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 assists and 6.8 rebounds through 30 games. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound guard is also averaging nearly 3 steals per game. 

At one of the guard spots is Bradley Harris, a 5-foot-11 senior who is averaging nearly 22 points per game and 5.6 rebounds. 

6-foot-3 senior forward Que Garner contributes 13.4 points per game to go along with 5 rebounds. 

Westover, coached by George Stackhouse do not have a blemish on their record this season and are led by junior guard D'Marco Dunn. The 6-foot-4 guard is ranked 6th in our HoopSeenNC 2021 rankings. He has offers from Vanderbilt, North Carolina A&T, UC-Riverside, VCU, ECU and UTEP. He is averaging 20 points per game. 

Senior forward Traymond Willis-Shaw is averaging 14 points per game. The 6-foot-7, Willis-Shaw has offers from UNC-Greensboro, Radford and South Carolina State. 

Keys to the Game

This one is going to come down to Freedom being able to handle the athleticism and size of Traymond Willis-Shaw. The tallest player for Freedom is 6-foot-4 James Freeman. Westover has Willis-Shaw at 6-foot-7, 6-foot-8 Elijah Hayes and 6-foot-6 Marvin Barnes.
