Greenforest holds off Trinity Christian to advance to title game

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA - Greenforest Christian is headed back to the Class A Private state championship game. But getting to the title stage next week in Macon wasn’t going to be easy. Trinity Christian was going to make sure of that.

The Eagles had to fly all over the floor to find a way to get past the new GHSA program on Friday night on the campus of Georgia College. Greenforest withstood a brilliant second half from an Isaac Brito-led attack, winning 52-47.

We saw a great fourth quarter from guards Jalen Forrest and Chase Cormier to hold off the Trinity Christian surge. Things got after the 6:34 mark when Greenforest big man Christian Fussell fouled out. The Greenforest was up 41-37 at the time.

That’s when Brito went to work. He attacked the rim hard, getting to the foul line and scoring at the rim at will, eventually taking a lead around the five-minute mark. However, Forrest was ready to do the same line of attack. He scored in the paint and benefitted from great passing from Cormier.

“We knew we were going to have to step up when Christian went out. We had to play better and keep working hard,” Forrest said after the game.

That they did. Forrest finished with 17 and Cormier had 11 points and five assists. Lamar Oden, Jr. scored 13 points and continued to be the ever-present senior force for this team.

Isaac Britto scored a game-high 21 points, 17 of them coming in the second half of action. Senior Rual Arias scored 11 points. North Georgia bound Brady Burnett was good inside as a rebounder and added eight points. Just in their second year of GHSA play, Trinity Christian ended their great season in the Final Four of the Class A Private division.

Greenforest will now play St. Francis in the Class A Private state title game on Wednesday, March 4 at 4 p.m.

Greenforest and St. Francis each have three state championships over the course of the last seven years.
