#MarchToMacon: AAA Elite 8

AAA was one of the most wide-open classifications out there, with a number of potential winners. Some of those potential winners remain, while others have already been eliminated. Here are a few things to watch out for:

BEST GAME: Jenkins vs. Calhoun. The reigning state champions, Jenkins, look to hand Calhoun their first loss of the season in Augusta. This one is also a big time style clash, with Jenkins liking a fast-paced, chaotic style and Calhoun preferring a halfcourt, more structured style. Whichever team gets the tempo to their liking while also taking care of the basketball will be in a good position to win this one.

BEST PLAYER MATCHUP: DeVorious Brown vs. Christian Keeling. Morgan County and Laney are not strangers to one another. The two teams have already split a pair of games against one another this year as well as playing three times last year, including a Moran County win in the state semifinals.  This matchup features a player who is scoring the ball as good as anyone in the state in Christian Keeling and a phenomenal athlete in DeVorious Brown, who has the ability to potentially negate an opposition’s scoring ability. If he can limit Keeling, Morgan County could have the upper hand here.

WHAT WE LEARNED IN FIRST TWO ROUNDS: Number one seeds came to play in AAA. Out of the eight number ones, six of them remain. That makes for some great matchups at this point in the tournament. Just with all the other classifications, this one is still wide open and any of the remaining teams can come out at the end with a ring. This one is not even close to being decided yet.

STORYLINES:

One Seeds. We could potentially get a Final Four with all number ones. The region winners have played well and haven’t let up or gotten complacent. This fact could make for some great games over the course of the next week in Augusta.

Home team magic. Two Augusta teams remain as the next two rounds are being played at Augusta University. Laney and Westside should have large crowds at their games on Thursday and Friday respectively. This could create an advantage for those two teams.

Geographic Diversity. Atlanta, check. Augusta, check. Macon, check. North Georgia, check. Savannah, check. Pretty much all of the major geographic locations in the state are being represented here, making for fun matchups with teams that they wouldn’t normally see outside of the state tournament.
