March to Macon: 7-A Notebook
SPARTA, GA -- The March to Macon took us to Central Georgia for the Region 7-A tournament. Eight teams from the smallest division in the Peach State took to the floor for a wild day of basketball. Here are Justin Young’s takeaways from the action.
- Tatnall Square shooting guard Calvin Slaughter had the hot hand against Lincoln County. The long and slender 6-foot-1 guard was six of seven from the floor to tune of 16 points in first 16 minutes of action. The scored on drives, once from three, a runner and off the dribble. It was a good first impression. The junior finished with a very efficient 30 points on the day. He was the best overall performer on Wednesday at the 7-A tournament. Slaughter missed just two shots from the floor, delivered with control made basketball play after basketball play on a day that was filled with wild action.
- Want to know who the biggest mystery man in Georgia high school hoops is? It is Wilkinson County’s Jonathan Baehre. I’ll have more on the 6-foot-9 forward later on the site.
- We invited WilCo big man Greg Couson to the Elite Preview after seeing him earlier in the year. We’re glad we did. He’s a 6-foot-7 rough-and-tumble post that can win the power battles. The junior should fare well against his positional foes at the camp. He played well against size of Georgia Military College.
- I’m also looking forward to seeing 2017 big man Nate Brooks at our Elite Preview camp. The 6-foot-7 post scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Stratford win over Aquinas He's not confused with portion identity. Brooks knows where his value is and doesn't deviate from it.
- It wasn't the best shooting performance from the Stratford duo of Quintez Cephus and O'Showen Williams but the Macon 1-2 punch had some help from their friends en route to the victory. Williams is one of the better-unsigned point guards in Georgia. He has good speed and played a nice overall game in the win. The 5-foot-11 senior scored 19, had six assists, five rebounds and five steals.
- Senior James Mitchell helped Stratford with his shooting touch, drilling four three-pointers in the win. He’s a nice option for Division III/NAIA teams looking for a sniper on the wing that will defend.
- Tre Gomillion of Aquinas did a lot for the Irish in their loss to Stratford. The linebacker look-alike is a strong guard and his team's best rebounder. The sophomore finished with a game-high 25 points, 14?rebounds, four steals and four assists in the game. He does a nice job of grabbing the board and starting the break. It was a strong performance in defeat.
- Ahmad Rand of Lincoln County was severely handcuffed with fouls but you saw flashes of why the hoop heads in East Georgia are high on what he can become long term. The 6-foot-7 forward has a quick bounce and an even quicker second bounce. Think a very raw version of NC State forward Shaun Kirk when watching Rand play.
- Georgia Military College guard Luke Lawson struggled to find his shot for the first three quarters of the game but got into a zone in the fourth and made things interesting. The 23 point per game scoring senior
