Chol Marial tracks towards being elite
As we place our eyes to the future, no one may have a higher basketball ceiling than Chol Marial, a 7-foot-2 center by way of South Sudan. Having been in the United States now for a few years and playing out his freshman year at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut, the potential out of the super talented and hard-nosed center is as good as it gets.
Still at this stage of the game, some of the very top prospects from within the 2019 class haven’t showed their faces to the nation. However, it would be hard for Chol Marial’s name to not be within one of the top spots within any ranking list come three years from now.
Super long sporting a 7-foot-9 wingspan, Marial already has NBA-type of length, though he is four years away from suiting up for a college basketball team. The Sudanese big man competes with a major mean streak and while he doesn’t carry a lot of weight at this time, he is more than happy to bang around down low, forcing others off of their spot on the block and in grabbing the low post on the other end of the floor.
Already capable of stepping out and hitting the 15-footer jumper along with converting on hook shots with either hand, the talent and potential with the Cheshire freshman is mind-boggling. His motor is already pristine and on the defensive end, Marial is a game changer as he blocks shots from in and out of his area, which is aided by his super quick feet and unreal length.
Planning on running with the Connecticut Basketball Club this summer, the process of acclimating himself has been a fluid process with him, something that he is constantly working on. “I am just focused on my school work because I’m still learning English,” Marial said.
On the basketball front, the ability to now step out and score the ball facing the basket while also producing from within the trenches is a valued skillset out of any frontcourt big men. With the continued evolution of the NBA game, Marial noted on who he models his game after. “I like to watch a lot of Anthony Davis,” he told HoopSeen.
Things haven’t picked up just yet on the recruiting end of the spectrum but it is easy to see that in the coming years, the best of the best will prioritize the 7-foot-2 center as its top recruit. Regardless, three programs have already offered the productive freshman. “Florida State, West Virginia University, and Iowa have offered me,” the Cheshire star noted.
Now with three high-level offers in the hopper already and a hard workers mentality in place, expect to hear much more about the high-motored, tough, yet deceptively skilled freshman out of Cheshire Academy in the coming years.
