Three games to watch tonight 1/8
6A: Douglas County (9-5, 4-2) at No. 10 Pebblebrook (11-6, 6-0)
Playing a tough non-region schedule has prepared the Falcons to make another run at the Region 3 title, a region which has become possibly the state’s most talented and a hotbed for D-I talent. Pebblebrook welcomes UNC signee Brandon Robinson and the Tigers. The swingman is a strong candidate for Mr. Basketball, averaging 25.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game. However in Tuesday’s loss at No. 1 Westlake, Robinson was harassed into 4-of-17 shooting for 21 points. Running mate Kalen Clifton adds 13.1 a night to power the Tigers. This game has the potential to turn into a track meet if Douglas County can’t slow Auburn signee Jared Harper and Collin Sexton. Both average over 25 points per game and make up the state’s highest scoring backcourt. In Tuesday’s rout of East Coweta, Sexton finished with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists while Harper tagged on 14 points and 12 assists. Ultra-athletic forward JJ Smith is usually the X-factor, averaging 12.6 points and 8.9 rebounds.
5A: No. 7 Camden County (13-0, 4-0) at Effingham County (12-3, 5-0)
First place is up for grabs in Region 3 with Camden County looking to remain one of only two teams (No. 2 Allatoona) in Class AAAAA that is still undefeated. 6-foot-3 senior shooting guard Jalen Smallwood leads the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding at 18.5 points and 8.1 boards a game. He is shooting 52 percent from deep and 87 percent from the line. 5-foot-11 senior Johnathon Canada is among the top passers in the state, averaging 10.5 points, 10.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 steals. Senior Logan Ballard stands 6-foot-9 at center and pitches in 13.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. The Rebels counter with three strong senior perimeter players of their own in Deshaun Wilkenson (17.1 ppg), Rashad Griffin (12.3 ppg) and PJ Brown (12.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg). 6-foot-2 junior Jaden Rodriguez adds 13.3 points per game and drains 48 percent of his threes.
3A: Lumpkin County (13-3, 4-1) at Banks County (13-2, 4-0)
Two recently minted 1,000-point scorers meet to try and lift their team to first place in Region 7. Behind new head coach Jeff Steele, who comes over after a 29-1 run at Johnson-Gainesville last year, Lumpkin County has revamped its program. 6-foot-4 senior small forward Jack Howard poured in 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Tuesday in a win over Dawson County to reach the 1,000-point mark. 6-foot-3 junior guard Zach Pulley recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while senior center Brandon Zarate had 18 points and nine boards. Zez Steeple, a crafty scoring point guard, surpassed the 1,000-point barrier on Tuesday as well in a Banks County 81-52 win over Franklin County. Steeple netted 26 points while 6-foot-6 senior Zac Orr posted 20 points and 11 rebounds. 6-foot-4, 245-pound Kahmal Wiley chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.
