Smile Generation All-Tournament team at Lake City Classic
The Smile Generation bracket of the Lake City Classic was a fun-filled three days of action. Calhoun took home the championship with a win over Carrollton. The Yellow Jackets were well-represented in the all-tournament team.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Jireh Wilson, PG, Calhoun, 2016: Before the tournament started, I pointed out Wilson as a player to keep an eye on. And he lived up to the expectations, earning tournament MVP. Wilson is a tank of a point guard with lots of size and strength. He ran his team very well all week and was a big scoring presence in all of Calhoun's games and did it with a glowing smile on his face the whole way. Despite his basketball prowess, Wilson is headed to play football at Wofford as an outside linebacker.
ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM
Demeirre Black, SG, Hillgrove, 2017: Black was one of the bigger surprises of the tournament, coming in with very little known about him. However, he was a big offensive standout, using his quickness and ball handling abilities to create opportunities in the midrange and around the rim. He will be a player to watch going forward but certainly made a name for himself this week.
Brendan Myles, SG, Whitefield Academy, 2016: As steady a player as you'll find, the Florida A&M signee might not do a ton to wow you, but he's very effective in multiple aspects of the game. On offense, he's a very good shot maker and can fill up the scoring column in a hurry. On defense, he will use his strength to defend multiple positions on the floor.
Kaelan Riley, SG, Calhoun, 2016: Also the quarterback on the Calhoun football team and a Mercer football commit, Riley is a tremendous athlete. He showed that in his acceleration on the floor and the plays he showed he is capable of making around the rim. He also is a factor on the interior at 6-foot-4 with great strength and toughness. Riley scored the ball at a high level all week, helping Calhoun claim the Smile Generation bracket championship.
Kohl Roberts, PF, Riverwood, 2016: Motor, motor, motor. Not a lot of players play the game harder than the Riverwood unsigned senior forward. Roberts rebounded the ball at a very high level all week, especially hitting the offensive glass for a number of putbacks. He also showed he can play above the rim a little bit with some emphatic finishes and blocks around the iron. Roberts is hearing from Georgia College, Tennessee Tech, Samford, High Point and a number of other DII's.
Desmond Webb, SG, Carrollton, 2016: Need a bucket? The 6-foot-4 guard will drum one up. Webb was the go-to scorer for the Trojans at the LCC. On opening day, he pumped in 30 points. On the next, he was part of the offensive balance. On championship Wednesday, Webb was really the only Trojan that could find the bottom of the rim against a talented Calhoun team.
