Saul Phiri turns the corner
One of the better wings left in the 2016 class throughout the New England region showed off plenty of production during his time at The Kiski Classic this past weekend. Standing over 6-foot-4 and with a thick, strong frame, Saul Phiri hit jumpers, defended his area, and rebounded the ball for his Putnam Science Academy squad, showing great value as a late year addition for college programs in finishing out their 2016 class.
Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Phiri is finishing out his final year of prep basketball play for the mighty Putnam Science bunch. Led by UConn signee Mamadou Diarra, top-15 junior wing Hamidou Diallo, and a bevy of other quality college prospects, Phiri has done a commendable job of playing into his role as an off the ball weapon.
Known primarily as a scorer of the basketball, the senior wing did just that as he hit on three first half 3-point jumpers against Elev8 on Sunday before finishing within 14 points in all and adding another perimeter jumper in the second half. He crashed the glass in corralling six defensive rebounds and show deceptive lateral abilities in containing both wing positions without giving the foul.
On the recruiting front, things were pretty fluid early on as many of the CAA, MAAC, and Atlantic 10 programs had offered the New Englander. However, after just an okay summer with the Mass Rivals crew, some laid off but it seems that Phiri is beginning to turn the corner again with his game. “I have offers from Florida International and Delaware, as of right now,” the Putnam senior said.
With the grades to make it at the next level and a pretty developed perimeter scoring game, Saul Phiri’s name could heat up as the temperatures lower throughout the northeast this winter.
