R.J. Mhoon shows waves of improvement
Since he was in middle school, 2017 Mobile (AL) Faith Academy power forward R.J. Mhoon has shown an immense amount of talent. The 6-foot-6 athlete has cemented himself as one of the best defensive stoppers in Alabama with his shot-blocking ability.
However, the question surrounding Mhoon for the past few years revolves around his position: where will he play at the next level? Labeled as a ‘tweener’ between a 3 man and a 4 man, the junior hasn’t allowed the questions to affect his game or production. In fact, in the span of a few months, he has taken his game to a new level with the transformation of his shooting technique.
“I’ve been working on my shooting a lot. I’ve been seeing a shooting specialist in Montgomery and he started my entire shot over. It’s made a big difference for me,” Mhoon told HoopSeen.com.
Mhoon showcased his refined shooting stroke last week at the Steel City Invitational, as he knocked down several perimeter shots each game. His ball-handling is improving, too. While it is doubtful that he could play on the perimeter full-time today, the potential is there. His improvements speak volumes and he has aspirations for his game.
“I want to be a 3 man. I feel like I can do it. I’m working on getting better in every aspect of my game.”
From a recruiting standpoint, several schools are closely monitoring the unique shot-blocker. Boasting a 3.6 GPA and a 23 on the ACT, several high-academic programs are already in the picture.
“Lipscomb, Cornell, South Alabama, and Troy are all interested. Snead State Community College offered me a scholarship following my game, too,” Mhoon said following his first game at the Steel City Invitational.
Lipscomb and South Alabama both had assistants in attendance to watch Mhoon during the event. With high academics and a unique game that is evolving, many more programs will come calling.
