Lake City Classic preview notes

One of the best holiday tournaments over the course of the last few years has been the Lake City Classic at Allatoona. This year’s field is no different, with a lot of players and teams that are more than worth the price of admission. Here are a few preview notes on one of the best holiday tournaments in Georgia:

  • My theme for this year’s field? Unsigned senior point guards. It seems like every matchup has at least one unsigned senior lead guard, and the field contains a few of the best unsigned senior guards in Georgia. McIntosh’s Will Washington, McEachern’s AJ Jones, and Allatoona’s Ephraim Tshimanga are three Division I caliber players that could become popular names over the course of the three days.
  • I really like the first round matchup between Milton and McIntosh, an early test between two state title contenders in their respective classifications. There are great matchups at several positions. This aims to be the best game slated in the opening round.
  • While there are a number of good guards, the bigs in the field could be just as impressive. Milton's Chris Lewis (Harvard commit), McIntosh's Dishon Lowery (Wofford commit), Lambert's Connor Mannion (Navy commit) & Ross Morkem (N. Georgia commit), McEachern's Bryce Smith, North Cobb Christian's Will Crumly, Riverwood's Kohl Roberts, & Kell's Brian Thomas round out a terrific group of frontcourt players.
  • If you like good defense, be sure to catch the opening round nightcap between Allatoona & North Cobb Christian. Both teams are giving up less than 50 points per game. However, even with the defensive prowess, both teams still have the ability to score a lot of points, so this one should be fun.
  • You have to love some home cooking, so I’ll spotlight host team Allatoona’s backcourt. Ephraim Tshimanga has a very impressive stat line, averaging 16 points, 8 boards, 7 assists, and 4 steals and is one of the state’s top defensive guards. He is joined by sophomore Trey Doomes, who is the team’s leading scorer, and senior Dylon Ramsey.
  • While the field of seniors will be something to watch, the youngsters should be a major theme as well. McEachern’s Isaac Okoro is one of the state’s best freshmen and could be a big x-factor if the Indians are going to make a run the championship. The freshman wing is already getting looks from the likes of Stanford and Virginia.
  • If you’re looking for a sleeper, I will point your eyes to Calhoun point guard Jireh Wilson. The senior floor general is a true point guard, with the ability to run his team and distribute the ball. He will do a little bit of everything this week and could fill up some stat sheets.
  • So, who wins? Well, the Mellow Mushroom Bracket is wide open, and I could honestly see any team advancing all the way through to win. I’ll take McIntosh, but it will be very fun to see the whole thing play out with any team being able to make a run. In the Smile Generation Bracket, I’m going to take Calhoun to beat Riverwood in the final.
