Lake City Classic final notes & thoughts

Another year and another Lake City Classic is in the books. Yet again, it was a very well organized and well run event that had some of the best teams in the state competing in a collection of great games. Here are a few thoughts from the three days of action:

  • Division I schools that are in need of a point guard for 2016’s class need to get out to see McIntosh, McEachern, and Allatoona. Will Washington, AJ Jones, and Ephraim Tshimanga proved their worth in different ways and could add a lot of value to programs in need of a lead guard in the spring.
  • Milton 2017 shooting guard/wing Alex O’Connell keeps improving. He has become a very prolific scorer and the halfcourt and when he is on his game, he’s very difficult to stop. He might have been the top scorer at the event, despite Milton struggling this week.
  • The theme for Calhoun was dual-sport athletes. Wofford football commit and point guard Jireh Wilson was fantastic all week and was named MVP and Mercer football commit Kaelan Riley was in the MVP conversation as well en route to being named all tournament. With these two and the other good pieces they have like Chapin Rierson and Ray Reeves, look out for Calhoun come state tournament time.
  • Count McIntosh senior point guard Will Washington among the most explosive athletes in the state. If you missed his SportsCenter top plays dunk, you need to check it out.
  • Allatoona might be the best defensive team in the state. They fly all over the court and play extremely hard. They might not have an elite, high major player on their roster, but they will be among the title contenders in AAAAA and surely a team nobody will want to play.
  • McEachern freshmen Isaac Okoro & Isaac Martin were very good this week. Okoro is an elite level prospect and could become a five tool player. He is very active in all aspects of the game and makes his mark in a lot of different ways. Martin is a knockdown shooter with good size for a freshman and hit some huge shots this week. The future is bright in Powder Springs.
  • Berkmar junior guard and Indiana commit Al Durham showed his efficiency in scoring the ball. He plays within the flow of a structured Berkmar offense and likes to create for his teammates. However, he showed when he does get shots, he knocks them down and can score the ball without taking a lot of shots.
  • Another unsigned senior that proved his worth was Riverwood big man Kohl Roberts, who was named all tournament and had a very good week. He plays the game with an extremely high motor and hits the glass very hard.
  • Kell junior big man Brian Thomas showed flashes of elite level skills this week. Always he was an eraser, protecting the rim and swatting away shots. However, when he caught the ball on the block this week he showed that he has a good set of moves to put points on the board.
  • Florida A&M is getting another good one in Brendon Myles. In 2015, they snagged Justin Ravenel and K’Ja Johnson, both of whom are big contributors as freshmen. Look for Myles to do the same. He competes hard on both ends and knocks down shots from the perimeter. The Rattlers are getting it done in Georgia.
  • Allatoona sophomore guard Trey Doomes is a player to watch in his class. He has improved from this point last year, and is showing some great signs in his game that say he could be a high level player. He earned his first offer after Allatoona’s Monday game from Kennesaw State.
  • Wofford has a great class coming in for 2016. Part of that class is McIntosh big man Dishon Lowery who could end up being a great piece for the Terriers. He rebounds the ball at a high level and fits with what Wofford likes to do.
