Four schools prioritizing 5-star wing John Petty
Over the weekend at the Lighthouse Classic in Corinth, Mississippi, 2017 J.O. Johnson (AL) wing John Petty was the most popular player in the gym. Why?
Well, his high-flying dunks and plays above the rim definitely kept fans on the edge of their seats in both games Friday and Saturday. However, the game against Callaway (MS) on Saturday evening went down in the history books. Petty set the Lighthouse Classic scoring record with 40 points.
“I think it was one of my most explosive games of the season so far, but I think I still could have played better,” Petty told HoopSeen.com following his performance.
The five-star junior displayed his full offensive arsenal over the weekend. Petty hit shots from the perimeter, finished at the rim, and showed impressive moves the mid-range – his best offensive quality right now. As expected, many schools are hot on his trail right now.
“I have offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas, UConn, Kansas State, and a lot more”
However, four schools are prioritizing Petty to this point.
“Kentucky, Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia are coming at me the hardest. I talk to them the most,” he explained.
Petty also broke down what some of the schools have been telling him to this point:
Kentucky: “I talk to Coach [John] Calipari. I talk to John [Robic] sometimes, but mostly I talk to Coach Cal. He really wants someone that wants to come there and work hard. I told him I was one of those people that would like to work hard, and he likes the interest.”
Alabama: “I talk to Coach [Antoine] Pettway and Coach Avery [Johnson]. I talk to them the most, too. Coach Avery just says he is going to turn the program around and make it into one of the best programs in the country. He says I could be a part of that and help them out.”
Auburn: “Auburn is basically telling me the same thing as Alabama. They are changing the program around and are going to make it a better one than the previous years. Bruce Pearl wants me to be there for that.”
Despite the high demand for his services, Petty is in no rush with the recruiting process. He is taking his time and weighing the options.
“I’m just taking my time right now. Me and my mom, we sit down and talk to everyone. We see what they say, how the program is, but mostly we’re looking for somewhere where I want to major in,” he said.
This weekend, Petty and his J.O. Johnson squad will head to Benton, Kentucky to play in the Marshall County Hoopfest.
