Alex Vilarino displays leadership qualities
One of the major breakout performers from this past weekend’s Thanksgiving Hoopfest was Alex Vilarino, a 6-foot-1 lead guard at McKinney High School. While there was little known of him entering the event, the Texas native filled up the stat sheet and in a very efficient manner and it seems that his recruitment may be closer to just beginning than ending this winter.
Running the show for the McKinney High bunch, Vilarino did a little bit of everything in Duncanville, Texas. With good size and a quality feel for the game, speeding the lead guard up can be a bit of an issue. He can score the ball at all three levels on the floor and has deceptive athleticism on two-handed conversions at the rim. Distributing and facilitating within the half-court setting is another strong suit of Vilarino’s as he can make others better without turning it over much.
In speaking further on his game, Vilarino mentioned what he does best on the floor. “Attacking the paint and finding my teammates and I have a good floater,” the productive guard told HoopSeen.
The younger brother of former Gonzaga and Appalachian State guard GJ Vilarino, it seems the recruiting front hasn’t been too kind to the senior guard up until now. “I have offers from UC-Davis and New Hampshire and am also hearing from Mercer, Santa Clara, Tulsa, and Houston,” the McKinney product noted.
Qualified for college play next year but with just two scholarship offers in hand, both of which coming from programs outside of his geographical niche, expect for heavier interest and further offers to be dished out in the coming weeks to the efficient and productive lead guard out of McKinney High.
